Within two strokes of this pick, it became clear that it is one of my most essential digging tools. My buddy and I were digging through really dry, rocky soil where a shovel just couldn't break through. The Garrett Retriever sliced its way easily through hard ground. It's not too heavy, but that doesn't hurt its effectiveness. It feels good in the hand and the handle is the perfect length. I saw reviews that mentioned the grip sliding off- which happened to me a little bit- but I can easily get over that since it's such a great digger. I kind of wish the magnet was on the handle so you could poke it around in holes easier, but it still picked up nails that were inches away from the head. Great tool. My buddy is buying one after having a chance to use mine.

I bought the Retriever II for rocky grounds I encounter from time to time. I also used the Retriever I for a while, so I can compare both. The Retriever II is much more heavy and not suitable to hang from your belt like the first model. In fakt it doesn't come with a belt loop. Yes it is heavy and it feels very solid. The rubber handle slides off especially in cold weather. As far as the metal goes it is of good quality and so far holds up to the challenge. But I have not used is for prospecting, just for digging in rocky soil. The Retriever II works well for that. Compared to the first model it feels like a pro tool where the first one felt more like a hobby gardening tool. What was said in another review about the decal is true. It is just a sticker and it comes off very easy. But who needs a decal anyways? If you rarely deal with rocky grounds, don't bu it because it will be overkill. In rocky grounds it performs well. Make sure you eat a decent breakfast because remember this thing ain't light.

This is a really durable tool. Been using it in rocky terrain for a while now and no sign of heavy wear. The rubber grip at the end tends to want to come off, But you can push it back on.

After years of use I did not see any appreciable results but the wife is asking me to buy new ones.

My son is an avid metal detector, and I have been trying to come up with something to give him for his birthday. When I saw this I immediately got it, knowing that he would absolutely freak when he saw it! Well, he loves it! He now keeps it in his detecting bag, and takes it everywhere. It is extremely high quality, and the magnet on the top is quite strong. My son was able to dig around in a creek with this and use the magnet to pick up his finds (although mostly trash). Garrett makes excellent products!

I bought this for my father for metal detecting in Idaho. It's not what you need for soft dirt or sand...but for hard ground or rocky ground, it shines! This is the ultimate tool for rocky ground. My father loves it and so do I!

the tip is indestructible,welded on the top and bottom- strong, light weight for its strength,the rubber handle does slip down when using due to the glazed finish. this tool digs into the dirt and spikes into trees when climbing hills I love it , this is a good weapon against cougars or bears by chance encounter.

Good pick a little heavy and over priced but still a good product.
