Heartwarming
I’m 65 and never read this book before. I didn’t know what I was missing. Highly recommend.

Excellent book. I had the paper back version many many years ago. I dont remember what grade I was in. Elementary school back in the 70s teacher read that book to us and I fell in love with this book

It's OK
I got this for a relative who's a boy 12-years-old. It came fairly highly recommended. And it is well written and written from the heart. I began to disengage when the boy, in learning how to set his new animal traps, caught the family cat so often that it often had to lie on its back to take weight off its injured paws. Eventually the cat turned mean and may have even run away. It was like, ok kid, why not learn to set your traps away from the house and out of range of your family's cat? The boy begins to hunt raccoons with his dogs. How he gets the dogs and trains and loves them is inspiring. And we have a Golden Retriever who is nuts for squirrels and rabbits, but thank God she is too slow to get them. She's a hunting dog and I understand that that is the way God made her. But in this book I began to feel sorry for the raccoons. Anyway, I stopped reading about half way through and haven't felt much interest since. I would like to like it, and I'm sure it is really touching when he loses the dogs in the end. That would affect me. But anyway there you have it.

Very sturdy
I bought a used copy of this book to make a book purse for my sister (it's her favorite book). The spine is very well made, so if you're rough on books, I recommend this hardcover. It was very difficult to separate the pages from the spine. It has that awesome binding with the staples and plastic cord and fabric (the kind you love getting if you work in a library because that book will never need to be mended). Anyway, I eventually did get them apart and the book purse is very sturdy and pretty.

Great pre-teen boys' book
I remember this book from sixth grade, and so bought a copy for my son, who is now in sixth grade. A beautiful story from rural Oklahoma around the turn of the last century, it describes the simple but hard lifestyle endured within a timeless tale of the love between a boy and his dogs. Many discussion opportunities with young readers about history, relationships among family members and other families, etc.

Classic and moving story.
This classic story of a boy and his dog gets better with every reading. Read it to my students when I was teaching.

Classic story
This is a well written classic story. I remember reading it as a child and being very sad but I recently repurchased this on Amazon And I found the story to be much more interesting as an adult. I have read it to my grandchildren to show them how much a young man was willing to do to fulfill his dream.

Wonderful book.
I read this book in 7th grade and it was a very good book. I have sent my daughter to a French Catholic school and they do not read the same books as a Public school, so I have slowly started buying many classics in hardcover so she can experience the same books. I know that Catholic schools also have a different reading curriculum but I feel books like this are important for children.
