SwissMicros DM42 - Advanced Scientific Programmable Calculator with High-Resolution Display and Metal Case

I'm fair when it comes to writing reviews and like to think I give the good and the bad. I bought this calculator as a modern take on the HP-42s calculator and have nothing but praise for it. I have since bought a HP-42s and have compared the two. I prefer the HP clickier buttons but the DM42 isn't far behind and they do the job well. Other than that, the DM42 is far superior in lots of ways - better screen resolution, more display lines, adjustable font size, load and save programs, dedicated top-row function keys to name just a few. They both have RPN keystroke programmability which is the main reason I bought them.The only improvement I could think of is to have a backlight for when it's getting dark but that's not a criticism.If you like/want to try RPN plus writing your own programs on a modern version of the HP-42s then look no further and buy this. It's really that good.

The DM42 is by far my favourite calculator to use. It successfully manages to combine the huge number of functions of a scientific calculator with the simplicity and elegance of a RPN pocket calculator, all on top of being the most customisable I've ever owned. The CUSTOM menu and XEQ make the calculator significantly extensible and easier to use if you have a specialised use case and having save states like a computer emulator makes filling memory (annoyingly easy to do on my casio graphing calculator) a complete non-issue! And even if you filled the calculator with states, you can offload them onto a computer, but I don't see anyone ever having a genuine need to do that.Unfortunately the calculator loses three stars for its build quality. The printing of the shift key legends on my calculator is noticeably off-angle (see picture), which is very disappointing for such an expensive device. I normally would not nitpick about such things, but since the calculator costs well over £100, I can't really overlook this and it's something that you should think about if you're considering buying this calculator.

If you like RPN calculators then this is the best there is. Powerful but simple programming, easy to use, great battery life, incredible multiline screen, everything a scientific calculator should be. I use it daily for engineering and statistics. It has a quality feel and should give many years of service. Compatible with HP 42S and HP 41C series calculators means that there are plenty of programs available if you don't want to write your own. Can connect to your computer to transfer the programs and backup the calculator. Too many features to name.

Shape, keyboard feeling, and programming features, along with its unique calculating performance and its ability to communicate with a PC through its USB port as well, for programs' storage and firmware updates, make this unit a real winner.

I own a few HP calculators and when I originally saw some videos on YouTube of the DM42, I wasn't too sure, but I should not have doubted. This is a tremendous calculator. If you are familiar with the HP-42s, this is a turbo charged version of it. If you are not familiar with the HP-42s, it is possibly one of the best calculators ever made, and this is a superb remake of it.There is not really much I do not like about it. It does everything you would expect it to do very well. It is fast, there is loads of memory, it is as easy to use as the HP-42s was, it has a great screen, much bigger than the original, which means much easier debugging of your programs and you can see all registers at once.Only thing I would have suggested is to put "F1" to "F6" on the additional row of buttons for easier referral. I would also have suggested printing the letter labels on the keys in a different colour for better contrast. The other very minor niggly bit is that if you fully press the ENTER key you get two clicks. This does not affect the number of times ENTER is actually pressed, but it feels a bit "odd".I especially like the built quality, which you can't really see on the pictures. This is a very well made product. An all metal body with quite a weight to it. Feels like it can handle a lot of abuse.The PC connectivity is a great addition, it allows you to save your programs and states to your PC for backup purposes, or indeed easily share programs.The screen is very clear and high contrast, which is great when your eyesight is not so good (like mine). The fact that it is nice and large really helps with programming. You can change the font size to see up to 10 lines of code (a bit too small for me). At 8 lines of code it is nice and crisp and easy to read.If you need to do some serious calculations for engineering or science purposes, this really is a superb calculator that will not disappoint. Well done SwissMicros.

A nice gift for a young student

Dieser Taschenrechner überzeugt durch eine perfekte (!) und absolut wertige Verarbeitung (Metallgehäuse, sehr gutes Display). Herauszuheben ist auch die Tastatur, die ein hervorragendes Eingabegefühl bietet. Verglichen mit den Rechnern von HP um Welten besser und die von HP waren schon echt gut!Der Funktionsumfang ist an den HP-42S Rechner angelehnt und er hat in der Implementierung des FREE42 Systems (inkl. Intel Decimal Floating-Point Math Library) noch ein paar Extras, die man für den Hausgebrauch vielleicht nicht unbedingt braucht, die aber für den professionellen Einsatz gut gebrauchen kann.Für mich als Wissenschaftler ist dieser Rechner genau das Richtige und ich bin immer noch überrascht mit wie viel Akribie und Perfektion dieser Rechner entwickelt und hergestellt wurde. Ich würde mir diesen immer wieder kaufen.Großes Lob an SwissMircos! Macht weiter so!

Ein geniales Gerät. Toll gelöst, wie eine stabile und ausgereifte Rechen-Software auf einem schnellen Prozessor mit einem hochauflösendem Display so energiesparend laufen kann, dass man mit einer einzigen Batterie sehr lange auskommt. Dafür wären 5 Sterne mehr als angemessen.Doch leider ist man als HP-Fan tastenmäßig derart verwöhnt, dass die Latte gerade bei diesem wichtigen Punkt extrem hoch hängt: Trotz deutlich spürbarem Tastenklick, wird der Tastendruck manchmal nicht registriert bzw. verarbeitet. Vor allem, wenn man die Tasten nur an den Ecken erwischt und relativ leicht drückt - das passiert mir leider sehr oft. Derart sensibilisiert kann ich mittlerweile diesen (Fehl-)Griff schon absichtlich anwenden, sodass jeder zweite Tastendruck unerkannt bleibt. Speziell die Tasten SHIFT, 1 und 2 sind da sehr anfällig. Nur, wenn man bewusst entschlossen die Tasten drückt, kann man vertrauensvoll arbeiten, ohne jeden Tastendruck am Display kontrollieren zu müssen. In der Hitze des "Rechengefechts" denkt man aber meist nicht an diese entschlossene Tastenbedienung.Ich war wirklich knapp daran das Gerät zurück zu senden, nach zwei Wochen intensivem Beschäftigen habe ich das Gerät derart lieb gewonnen, dass ich mit dem Nachteil leben kann. Ich gehe nun bedienmäßig etwas entschlossener ans Tastendrücken, dass der Fehler nur noch sehr selten vorkommt.Der Hersteller bemüht sich aufopfernd und mit tollem Support einem bei allen Problemen zu helfen. Ein empfohlenes Zerlegen des Gerätes und "lockern" der Tasten hat eine gewisse Linderung gebracht, behebt die Probleme aber nicht endgültig.Wenn ich schon kritisieren/rezensieren darf, dann hätte ich da noch einige weitere Verbesserungsvorschläge:* Die breite ENTER-Taste ist letztendlich auf 2 Einzeltasten aufgehängt. Drückt man sie an der falschen Stelle, spürt man 2 Tastendrücke ... das verwirrt doch etwas.* Trotz großem, hochauflösendem Display hat es der Hersteller nicht geschafft, einen wirklich großen, leicht abzulesenden Font zu installieren. Also viele, aber kleine Informationen am Bildschirm - leider bleibt auch die aktuelle Rechenzahl (X-Register) nur klein dargestellt. Das ermüdet meine ohnehin schwachen Augen.* Die Buchstaben A..Z am Keyboard könnten in einer anderen Farbe gedruckt sein, um sie rascher und besser von den Funktionstexten unterscheiden zu können.* Das wirklich tolle Display spiegelt leider massiv.* Die USB-Schnittstelle liegt relativ tief verbaut, dass erst mein drittes Kabel einen derart langen Stecker aufwies, um die Datenübertragung zum PC zu ermöglichen. Scheinbar hat das Gerät auch Probleme mit einem zu langen/dünnen USB-Kabel.* Liegt der Rechner, der ein wirklich stabiles (Metall-)Gehäuse hat, am Tisch, wackelt er. Das wäre zwar mit Klebeband an einem Gummifuß leicht behebbar, sollte aber bei einem Rechner dieser Liga von Haus aus passen.* Das billig anmutende Etui ist für einen Rechner dieser Klasse ein Scherz.

Dieser Taschenrechner ist ein Profi-Gerät, das sich daher auch perfekt als Schulrechner eignet. Wer schneller zum Ergebnis gelangen möchte und immer eine Kontrolle über alle Zwischenergebnisse behalten möchte, wer nach einer fehlerhaften Rechnung nicht nochmals von vorne mit der Eingabe beginnen möchte, der kommt an diesem Taschenrechner mit RPN Eingabelogik nicht vorbei. Perfekte Verarbeitung und lustige Bilder (selbst konfigurierbar) im ausgeschalteten Zustand (extrem geringer Stromverbrauch) sind ein Hit. Ein ermüdungsfreies superscharfes Display mit großem Betrachtungswinkel ist ein weiterer Pluspunkt. Die Tasten haben einen gut definierten Druckpunkt und geben damit eine perfekte Kontrolle bei schneller Eingabe.Durch den geringen Stromverbrauch hält die Batterie sehr lange, der Rechner arbeitet sehr schnell (moderner Prozessor). Falls die Batterie doch einmal aus ist hilft ein Akkupack für das Handy sofort weiter. Daran angeschlossen arbeitet dieser Rechner nochmals deutlich schneller (3x). Ein solches Akkupack ist auch bei keiner Prüfung ein Problem.Der dm42 verarbeitet praktisch alle Programme der HP 41CV und CX Modelle, nur eben sehr viel schneller und genauer. Damit steht die größte Programmsammlung aller Taschenrechner zur Verfügung.Die Genauigkeit ist legendär. Die 34 Stellen werden jederzeit über den SHOW Befehl angezeigt, selbst wenn die Anzeige auf weniger Stellen eingestellt ist.Achtung: Es gibt momentan kein gedrucktes Handbuch in deutscher Sprache. Hier lernt man gleich auf Englisch! Z. B. durch die Free42 Anleitung im Internet. Eine deutsche Anleitung zum HP42s ist perfekt für diesen Rechner geeignet und als PDF im HP Museum gegen einen geringen Betrag erhältlich.

Top product. As owner of nearly all ever built HP, many TIs, Sharps etc. I can clearly state that this one is the best of all. Top housing, amazing keyboard, high end display. Never thought that this kind of product would ever be produced.

Je suis en possession de cette machine depuis environ 1 semaine. Je peux comparer avec FREE42 monté sur mon téléphone mobile Android. Donc le DM42 peut traiter une plage de nombres bien plus étendue, avec une plus grande précision et beaucoup plus rapidement. La machine est très bien finie, coque en métal, touches bien réactives. La précision et le savoir-faire suisses. Je n'ai évidemment pas tout testé. Il faut de toute façon lire le mode d'emploi spécifique (sur Internet) car il y a des modes de fonctionnement différents de la HP-42S, par exemple pour les fonctions ASTO et AREC du mode alpha. C'est amusant de voir que la calculatrice HP-42S continue de vivre dans la DM42 (il y a bien sûr aussi des émulateurs, dont FREE42), alors que, en mathématiques appliquées au calcul automatique, la grande invention des années 70-80 a été l'APL et le J (Iverson), qui offrent des possibilités bien au delà de la manipulation d'une pile de registres. NB la DM42 peut afficher les 4 registres simultanément. Et elle peut faire fonctionner l'imprimante infrarouge (822440B) d'origine HP.Il y a bien sûr des défauts. La mémoire est limitée, gros inconvénient pour travailler sur bases de données. NB. FREE42 utilise la mémoire disponible sur le smartphone, (plus de 2,4 Go. sur mon smartphone).L'autre défaut est le connecteur usb qui tient mal avec la plupart des câbles, car la tranche légèrement arrondie où il est placé gène l'enfoncement complet du câble de liaison. On s'en sortira avec un câble prévu pour le Nokia N8 par exemple.L'écran est du type encre fluide, comme sur une liseuse, mais pas rétroéclairé. Quand on éteint la machine, elle affiche une image fixe qui ne consomme presque rien. (la pile de type CR2032) doit bien durer au delà de 6 mois, bien plus que les deux piles dont est pourvue la hp 17bII+ avec laquelle je perds souvent mes programmes). Ce qui est vraiment regrettable dans une si parfaite calculatrice est le choix désastreux des images pour le mode "off" (il y en a une dizaine qui s'affichent à tour de rôle). Je crois qu'on peut les remplacer par d'autres. Mais bon. Quand je pense que mon père m'a légué de très belles gravures de Zürich (avec le pont en bois)....
