Ug. DO NOT PURCHASE!
This is exactly what I needed to go through 100's of slides and 1000's of negatives. It does take time and effort, in terms of doing each slide/negative 1 by 1, but the device was perfect for the job. That was my original review...which is still true. The only problem is, the device stops working after 1 year. I emailed with customer service and they blamed the cables. I got all new cables. Still didn't help. I then tried to contact them about a replacement. They refuse to respond to my emails. It's very frustrating as I spent almost $250 on a product a get no customer support, when this is cleary a hardware isssue. I would never recommend this product to another.

Nice scanner, horrible software
Like most people I bought this to scan old slides. Needed one that would work with Mountain Lion on my iMac. Almost NO instructions. Actually, I had to go to the website listed on the bottom of the scanner to try and figure it out. Downloaded driver from website but could not use the Mac's built-in scanner software, iMac doesn't recognize the scanner as a scanner. Very disappointing. When I was about to pack it back up to return it to Amazon I tried their software and it worked....BUT.... you have to re-do the settings each time you run the software and good luck finding where the settings are.The scans or "good", don't have another scanner to compare them too. The software... A BIG FAT "F".Horrible, as in they should be ashamed to ship a product with such crap. The three stars are for the scanner not the software. It's hard to find anything so I didn't want to say don't get this one; just wish I could have found one that scanned decent that I could use with iMac's scanner software.

It delivers
The scanner is compact and practical to use and the quality of the output (if you use high pixel values) is fine, perfectly acceptable. However if you use the scratch rmoval feature (which is good by the way) it makes it rather slow. If you have time in your hands value form money wise , I would recommend it.

Pacific Image PrimeFilm 7250u
As with almost everyone else, I bought this item for a long overdue scanning of colour negatives and slides taken over 55 years, especially shots of tramping, (likely hiking to you), and climbing in New Zealand's alpine regions in the 1950's and 60's. I have also used it to scan historical material dating from before 1960, of things long gone from our landscape. But here is how good I really rate it. I have abandoned my ambition to purchase a top-of-the-line modern Digital SLR camera, in favour of my 1959 model Leica M3 and very fine-grained colour negative film. The reason is, mainly that I have yet to see digital shots which can compare with scans from either my Leica (3 Leica lenses), or the Tamrons which I use with a 'Leicaflex' R-4 and Minolta XG-100. I have tested the results by making massive blow-ups in 'Photoshop' where the pixellation of images kicks in long before film-grain is even an issue. I do not use the software which came with the scanner. I much prefer 'VueScan Professional'. Currently, using a small accessory which I have made from scrap material lying around the place, I am very successfully scanning from 16mm movie-frames as well. This scanner is well-designed, simple in concept, and does what it claims to do. The film/slide holding arrangements are a little fragile and have to be looked after, but at the price, this scanner takes a lot of beating.

Replaced an older PrimeFilm scanner
Okay, below is my original review, but now I have to change it. A couple weeks after I began using it, it put an orange fringe on parts of the scans. I thought it might be software related. Although my old 3650U was acting up (putting a wide vertical "scrape" through the scans, it would still scan. Lo and behold, it was doing the same thing. I moved to another computer. Same problem. After contacting PrimeFilm, they said it was not a software problem, but an LED alignment problem and to send it to them, where it would take 2 weeks to 4 months to repair and return. As the problem exists in both scanners, I still think it is a software or firmware problem but I am still considering sending it for repair (I have about 3 more weeks to make that decision). My old model 3650U started acting up and was no longer usable. This one looks and sounds exactly like what I am used to, but has a higher scan resolution, which sometimes is necessary in the photos I scan. I do not use the interface software that came with it because, though it gives superb results, it is very slow. An inexpensive commercial interface gives the same results in half the time. It still takes about 3 minutes to scan a slide, though. The only reason I won't give 5 stars is because it scans so slowly, though that should not be a surprise for a slide scanner.

Junk
Wow, was this a piece of junk. The only thing worse then the scanner was the software. Perfectly clear negatives came out out of focus. Night shots with a clear sky had so much noise in them black sky turned into a gray cloth like texture. And about every 7th negative scanned started coming out with random horizontal lines throughout the image. Only way to solve that was to power off the scanner, shut down the software, restart and reconfigure the software with settings that should be saved but are not. The only good thing it did is remove spots, dust and scratches, but in that mode, scanning was much slower. I sent my negatives out to be professionally done and they came back almost perfect. This is my third try at scanning film at home and I shall not try again. Did I say the software sucked. Yes it did.

BUGGY SOFTWARE / SCANNER STREAKING ISSUES!!!
Thought I was going to like this product, but then I noticed problems when scanned light images. Scanner leaves vertical streaks in every scan! Saw it on my Pictures and confirmed with a blank white scan. Too bad i did not notice it until I spent (wasted) many hours scanning (darker images)! Poor quality software also, VERY BUGGY got locked out about once an hour. And Yes I have a new computer (i7 processor). This is going back today! If you decide to order this product, save yourself some time and do a clear, empty scan FIRST to see if you have the same issues!
