Daughter loved this book!
My daughter needed a book to read for school and she picked this one out as it sounded interesting. I actually found myself reading it as well. I thought it was a very well written book and it shows just how teenagers and parents are today without sugar coating anyting, and how their decisions affect other people. I think it's a good book to read with your daughter or son because it opens up a conversation that can be very meaningful between a parent and a child, especially in this day and age. I would definitely recommend this book for any person 13 and up.

mixed feelings.
This is going to be a tough book to review. I say that because for most of the book I thought it was going to be five stars. I loved it..until the end. And if you have read this I am sure you will guess my complaint because I have read several reviews that all mention what I am going to mention. So this book is from the POV of eight different High School girls. Every year, at this school a list comes out. The list contains eight names. The prettiest and the ugliest girl from each grade. That's it.The book is about the impact of the list for each of those eight girls..the four voted prettiest and the four voted least pretty.I adore realistic YA Fiction and for most of it, I enjoyed this book. The characters were real and fleshed out and I was amazed at how well the author got into the heads of these young girls. You know, connecting to characters is pivotal in any book. And I admire the writer for taking us down the path of EIGHT different girls, each so distinctive that their voices were heard clearly and the reader could feel their angst and pain. And unlike some, I had no issue with having so many POVS. I really didn't. One of my all time favorite YA books, Lois Duncan's "Daughters of Eve" has I believe TEN..or possibly more..POV'S. So what's eight? Works for me!What did not work for me was the ending. And I am not one to take TWO points off for an ending. But it was such a let down to such an awesome book and the last book I read this year to complete my reading challenge. I was hoping for a five!ENDING SPOILERS:OK..I could have understood if one or two of the girls were not touched upon. But the book does not tell us about how things turn out for ANY of the girls! Now that is not my thing. I invested hours of my day reading this. And the end is so sudden I had to go back to make sure I had not missed something. We do not know ANYTHING. It is like the book HAD no ending. You are just reading and it stops. Meanwhile all the characters you are invested in..I mean you find out NOTHING. You do not even find out what happens at this dance the whole book was leading up to. The book ends with about two percent of the book devoted to the dance.I do not think these type of endings are hip or cool or thought provoking at all. Not when the books seems UNFINISHED. Unless this is a start of a new series and I don't know that, (in which case I will happily apologize and bump my rating up to a five) then I don't get it.I almost feel like..what was the point? And I do feel cheated and now the whole book feels a bit manipulative. All that fighting..everyone is mad at someone. And such deep issues are explored. Can we, the reader, not know anything about how one thing in the book turns out? It maybe one of the oddest endings I've ever read. I am not kidding.I also felt for Jennifer and could not stand Margo even though I felt at the end the writer was attempting to give her some soul. It did not work as she may have been my least favorite character. And she gets crowned Homecoming queen. That's it. None of the other seven girls, all in the midst of deep emotional issues, are even mentioned again. What gives? What Jennifer did was pretty horrible but she was one hurting puppy and I got that. Margo on the other hand..I could not feel anything for her but contempt.I LOVED Laura. I want Laura as a friend! In fact she reminds me of one of my closest friends. What a beautifully woven character! So a three rating it is. I adored the book for ninety percent and that count for something. If you don't mind having literally no ending, you will most likely enjoy the book if you like YA.

Amazing book to teach teens the importance of mental health and kindness to others.
The List is a book by Siobhan Vivan. It’s about how something so little like a list can really impact a teenager's year through high school and how people see them. The story is based on a list posted every year stating the prettiest and the ugliest girl in each grade. If you were on the list named as the ugliest or even the prettiest it could impact your year tremendously. This book does have an amazing story about all the girls on the list points of view but it is also a great book teaching about mental health and how something so little can make someone’s year as easy as a piece of cake or a time that can destroy your mental health. Yes, your name is just on a sheet of paper. But that sheet of paper is posted all around school and everyone knows it. This book can teach teens the importance of how hard some things could be for others. It shows that putting others down can really make a change in their life. Calling someone ugly doesn’t make you any prettier and The List really teaches that lesson. In the story even the girls who are called the prettiest also are struggling because they have so much pressure on them. If teens read this story it shows the importance of teen mental health and how you or others can impact it in a positive or a negative way.

Great book but the ending left me wanting more
The idea for this book is both interesting and appalling - a school where the highlight of every year is a list appearing naming the prettiest and ugliest girls in the school - and despite the arbitrary nature of this, it seems to be accepted as the truth by the student body. The writing is very sharp and it would definitely draw me to read more books by this author and I found very entertaining. The girls all react differently to being on the list - some such as Marge see it as their due, Sarah decides to rebel and get her revenge on the other students at the prom, Bridget, a recovering anorexic is perhaps the worst affected, as the comments beside her name prove to be extremely triggering to her condition. The book raises all sorts of question - what is beauty/ugliness and who is qualified to judge? Why isn't there a similar list for the male students? It also introduces a character who proves that ugly too can be more than skin deep ...That having been said I have to agree with some of the criticisms - eight character viewpoints is perhaps too many to be covered in a book of this length, and some - such as Amy don't get much of a look in. I also agree that the ending lacked closure and left too many storylines just hanging in mid air. The author cheated in my mind - she created all these issues and then instead of giving the reader the kind of dramatic closure we need, she ends on a mildly ironic note. For that I have deducted one star.

Enjoyable, and exciting book!
This was an interesting read, which had me curious right from the start!*I liked how realistic the book was - not like most books I have read. Also, the dialogue was powerful, and there were lots of twists in the story!*The plot was very creative…Potential oozed out of the book, and I loved how the characters backgrounds and problems were all different.~I do have two complaints. :( Firstly, this is one made by a lot of people: too many perspectives. 8, to be exact. I agree a lot, but it also made the story unique in its own way.~Secondly, the characters were quite similar. I know that with 8 main characters, there's bound to be similar families, but there were a lot of instances. But it's difficult to make THAT much characters without that problem, I would say. :)¬I recommend this book for 13-18, maybe 13-19, it depends on your reading type, I guess.P$: Read the sample first to see if you like it, I do!Sincerely,The Bookworm;D

Too much going on and very lackluster
So, I read this book after reading another by the author. I wish I hadn’t bothered.I read a lot, I usually get through a book every few days, however this book has taken a long time for me to read. I wasn’t interested in the story, as 8 characters is too much for a length of the book. You get confused about who is who as there is little character variation. The concept is great but the delivery is flawedThe ending is also frustrating, it doesn’t feel like it’s the ending of a book and more of a chapter. It wasn’t an ending that made you want more, it was an ending that felt unfinished.I had high expectations that weren’t met. The potential wasn’t utilised

All too true in today's world!
This book really portrays the feeling that most kids and teens now feel, the feeling that they are not good enough. The characters all had different storylines, all very intriguing and all too true in today's world. In the book you follow you follw a group of teens, who have all either been called the prettiest or ugliest in their year. Quite soon in to the book , you realise that what these people look like mean nothing, as they all have some horrific troubles of their own and the list has scarred them all, made their lives worse, whether they were prettiest or ugliest. But the real question is, who made it? And why were they chosen?I thought this book was fantastic, really showing the fight for us to be happy with what we look like and teaching us not to judge a book by it's cover. The reason i gave it 4 stars is because it was a little confusing as each chapter was told by a different person.I'm hoping there will be a sequel to this book as the ending left me wanting more.

Very good
I liked this book, it flicks back and fore to the different characters which is sometimes hard to follow , but overall a really good read. The ending could have been a bit better which makes me wonder if there's a follow up.
