Incredible book!
I am an occupational therapy student and (hopefully) a future ABA therapist, with pretty extensive experience with children and adults who live with autism. Carly's witty, sassy, insightful, and undeniably intelligent voice is such a powerful declaration of inherent worth to the neurotypical world that too often deems people with autism worthless. I wish every literate teenager and adult would read this book - think of the stereotypes and stigmas that would be shattered! People are people, worthy of love, regardless of medical labels or dumb societally-constructed measures of achievement. I am so grateful for this book, and for Carly, and truly think that it will help change how our society views differences. After all, we're all different, and every one of our voices are worth being heard.

OK
It is a good enough book, but I thought this was Carly's book and not her fathers. I wanted to hear more of her thoughts and this contains more of his thoughts, with some inserts by Carly's.

This book helped educate me and rewarded ME by allowing me to get to know this amazing girl and family just a little bit
I know nothing about autism and the life lead with a family in such crisis. This book helped educate me and rewarded ME by allowing me to get to know this amazing girl and family just a little bit. I have learned so much. Money can't buy how important that is, most importantly to simply know how all of us everywhere relate to an autistic person when we meet them. I know now that I can speak to them and they know, and may even enjoy it.

AMAZING BOOK
Every single person in the world should read this book. I have experience and do a lot of research on autism but this book opened up my eyes about so many different aspects of autism. Just like Carly stresses, ignorance is not having knowledge about autism. Everyday should be national learn about autism and that is exactly what this book does. It teaches you so much about what people with autism, who may not be able to speak, go through. Carly reminded me that there are no limits to what I can teach the children I work with. Thank you so much for sharing this book Carly and a special thank you to Carly's father for being an amazing father.

KNOWING HOW IT FEELS TO HAVE AN AUSTISM CHILD
I felt the families frustration, which it clearly defined. The last chapter is carlys answers. I wanted more from her to teach me how to help children with AUSTISM and it did not do that for me. I saw a small light on Carly, but I wanted to see inside her mind and heart. Good book for parents to understand the struggle they face with an autistic child, but for the parent who has an AUSTISM child, it seems to give a little insight of how carlys was feeling about different issues. It validates a parent on their continued struggle to be a good parent and Carlys tells how she loves her father reading a book to her every night and what it means to her. She explains her tics and why she does them. We have tics too, but no one fights with us daily for doing them like tapping our foot. Excellent book for parents and families who have an autistic child.

I loved it, but cried through most of it
I cried through the first half of the book. I am the mother of a child diagnosed with severe autism. Like this family we have been to geneticists, nutritionists, gastroenterologists, endocrineologists, otolaryngologists (ENT's). We have had metabolic panels, karyotypes, X-rays, MRI's. We have had other medical concerns with our child including surgery and various other diagnoses. We are NOT a "well to do" family. So to say that this book is not representative of the resources available. At least medically, is mildly dishonest. We do have state appointed therapists that come to the home (Ours is a special education teacher) as well as 2 ABA therapists, we go to a facility for Physical, occupational, and speech therapy. We don't have a nanny though (Goodness how I wish I did), and I work 50+ hours a week. We figure it out, any family can.To say this is not representative of a real families struggle is silly to me, as parents of children on the spectrum we all know the extremes that can be present within the disorder. Some children talk, some don't.Also, much of the second half of the book is written in carly's words. No, the book is not an account written entirely in her voice. but her parents kept transcripts and copies of their conversations and her father included those in much of the writing in the book. All in all, I think the purpose of this book, at least to me, was to offer hope. Hope that my seemingly out of control child will one day be able to tell me what she needs. Hope that one day, something will just click. I am not "wealthy", But much of the early struggle still is reminiscent of my daughters early life.Tammy, If you still come and read these reviews, Thank you. I am not Canadian, but I absolutely appreciate any advocate for children. Many of us are so wrapped up in what needs to be done for our own children, that we do not have the energy at the end of the day to do what you are doing for the children who are not ours.

Life changing!
I did it!! Completed CARLY'S VOICE in 3 days!! Not because I skipped pages, but because I sat up till 2am every single night and went to school with dark circles under my eyes - but I was completely unable to put this book down. Now I have to you tube every video on her. What a profoundly life changing book - it has opened my heart with love and compassion for this cause of autism, and has opened my mind with so much knowledge on the subject right from the "horse's mouth"! Amazing book.If you haven't bought it, I highly highly recommend it. Keep the Kleenex nearby, but it will uplift you and inspire you even through the tears.. Thank you Arthur for your honesty in the book, Carly for all the insight, the emotions, the wit and the explanations... Knowledge truly is power. If I can be of help to one more child with autism because of your book, it will be worth it!Thank you, thank you, thank you both for this wonderful book!

Don't judge a book by its cover
I'm a parent of a "globally delayed" daughter and there's much I can relate to in this book. Each globally delayed child has a unique combination of issues that need to be addressed and sometimes these can appear to be overwhelming. This book gives a pretty good picture of the journey of one family from the father's perspective. Most of the book is written by Arthur Fleischmann, Carly's father. Only the last but one chapter is actually written by Carly herself - although there are lots of speeches and comments by Carly peppered throughout the second half of this book. Arthur writes like a pro, making the book all the more poignant.Once started, this book is difficult to put down - with at least one shocking chapter that caught me by surprise. When I was half-finished reading this book I wanted to contact all my own daughter's professional helpers and ask them to read it too. But don't expect much response if you do! It will take time for the message to get passed down. So, what's the message? To paraphrase Carly: don't judge a book by it's cover. Just because a person looks and behaves wierd doesn't mean that they are. And every one of these people has an unspoken voice that needs to be heard by someone. Each autistic person has something to say, whether you can hear it or not.Carly has proved this message to the world and given us some unique insights into her own world. It's the duty of every parent, carer, professional and person-in-the-street to take away this message and ponder on it. She is not the first to do so, but Carly and Arthur are the first to document both sides of the story in this unique and emotive book.

one persons perspective
as i am autistic i wanted to read it ....but it was from the viewpoint of the father .....was glad there was a book to show people that autistic people are so much more capable than what you see ....but it left me with the feeling that only those who could afford all the care can get to lead better lives ....a bit like anne franks diaries ....although the subject goes through traumas ....they have a sort of selfishness which makes it hard to have empathy ....and its all about the people around them ....not said this very well

Please read this book!
Arthur Fleischman is one amazing man, father of three, including Carly who is autistic and 'non verbal'. This is the story of the family's journey with Carly, and her finding her voice through technology. There are so many people in our world on the autistic spectrum, and it is so important that neurotypicals have some understanding, so we can see through the externals and enjoy and value each other in our differences. Carly, in becoming able to express her voice, has opened up a whole world for us by telling her story, by sharing what is going on for her, by sharing her wit and wisdom, and by advocating for all people with autism. Thank you so much, Carly. You make the world a richer place and you give us the chance to be better, more loving people.

Brilliantly moving and highly insightful
I bought Carly's Voice after being shown a video of Carly communicating with a celebrity.I work in the Psychology field within a highly specialist Neuropsychiatry and challenging behaviour service and assess and treat many children with Autism Spectrum Disorders amongst many coexisting co-morbidities. This book offers a unique, parental and individual perspective; is easy to read and really takes you on one family's rollercoaster journey.I would highly recommend this book to anyone whether you or working in this area, are a parent/carer or not.

Recommended to anyone who wants to understand autism better
Very well written! Without complicated medical language the book gives you insight both into the autistic brain but also the experience of being a parent or a carer. I feel I have learned a lot and as someone who works with autisitic children on a daily basis this has helped me to understand them a lot better.

This book opened my eyes
I ordered this book after seeing a video of Carly on You Tube. This came at a time when I was starting to wonder whether my severely autistic non verbal son might have a lot going on inside despite his difficulties conveying it. The book was written beautifully and honestly by Carly's dad, warts and all, but sensitively done. There is a lot of Carly's writing transcribed in it. I really related to a lot of the family's experience in terms of dealing with the daily challenges of autism, and also the draining experience of trying to advocate for your child and organise the right support for them. All the while juggling the needs of their other typically developing children, work demands, serious illness and so forth. Reading Carly's words opens up new meaning and understanding to some of the more challenging behaviours of autistic children, I feel in a way its so valuable to share the words and thoughts of someone who is dealing with a serious disability with others as it gives a voice to those who don't have one (yet) like my son.

Amazing and inspiring
This book is a must read. An awe-inspiring story of a girl who has achieved so much against all the odds. The book has educated me in a way I could not have got elsewhere. I now have a thorough and important understanding of what life is like for people with autism and what things I can do to help them achieve their wants, goals and dreams. Most importantly it has educated me on what Autism is, no doubt Carly has described and explained Autism in the best way possible - from Autism itself. Buy the book, read the book and love the book!!! From a happy, optimistic, empathetic reader from Ireland

Incredible
This book is one of the best things I've read all year. Even though Carly's dad write the majority of the book, you still get an incredible insight into the life of Carly, her struggles, and how she overcomes them. I thought I knew a fair amount about autism, but having read this I realise I was really naive to have thought that. This book forms a great understanding of autism and how it affects people and I now see these people in a completely new light. This girl is inspirational and needs more acknowledgement for the things she is doing for others like her, as well as the world around her. Just incredible.

A book to ponder over
Highly recommended if you want to learn what it is like to be severely autistic and unable to communicate and the long journey of the family and the autistic individual to a place of communication, and what was required to achieve this.

A wonderful insight
Everyone working with exceptional kids should be required to read this inspirational book. An amazing read. It makes the reader laugh and cry too. A very moving account by Carly's dad of what it is like to have the responsibility and the trauma and joy of raising such a child. This book is a gift from Carly and her dad that allows the reader to look behind the veil of autism

amazed
A must read!!I've read so many autism books on my journey as a parent of children with non-verbal autism, this is the first that comes anywhere near describing what we live with day to day. A truly inspirational story, which reminds you to NEVER give up hope that you will find a way through the sensory issues, behaviours and communication difficulties and discover the unique and special individual behind them.
