Compassionate advice w/ lots of humor
I bought this book when it was first published in 1998. While I may not always follow Roth’s advice, I find her suggestions practical and fun and inspiring. In fact, I usually reread “When you eat...pull up a chair” once a year. This copy was purchased for a dear friend with similar issues.

It's a 100!
Love this author and book! On a scale of 1-10 and 10 being tops, it's a 100. Highly recommend this book. I checked it out of the library first and then just had to finish the book with my own copy and have for reference in the future.

A chance to read something different.
This is a great book. I suggest it in my Bookstore all the time for anyone who wants to read something a little different. The view on loving your body and how you see food is unlike most diet and health books. This is more about the mind. It's told with humor and love. My suggestion is that, if you do like it, pick up other books by Mrs. Roth. All are well written and give an interesting perspective.

Just buy it
Wonderful book. I'd already read several books on intuitive eating by the time I got this, but it helps to remind me what's important and that the way I perceive myself is in my control. I keep it next to my bed and re-read it randomly.

This is a gem!
What a great gift Geneen Roth has given us. As a diet coach, I have recommended (and gifted) this book to many clients who are overeaters. It's light and easy reading and basically reminds us that we should love ourselves above all else. Each chapter is warm, humorous, or touching, as Roth comes up with ways we can treat ourselves well without using food as a comfort or reward. We can dress ourselves nicely, use the expensive dishes or perfumes just because--and not wait for a special occasion, or eat what we like and simply savor it instead of feeling guilty. For everyone who struggles with overeating, this book is a reprieve and a friend; Roth is someone who understands what you are going through and is there to gently nudge you into taking good care of yourself as the first step to overcome your dependency on food.

A Delightful Journey into Real Happiness
I read this book for the first time years ago. I loved it then, and I love it now. Having participated in a Breaking Free workshop with Geneen in the mid-1980s in San Francisco, I can tell you that the wisdom in this little charmer of a book can change your life. Read it, laugh, cry, and settle into yourself. Today is the best day. Yes!

Just makes you feel better
It doesn't matter if you feel you have eating problems, or weight problems, or any problems at all, this book just finds a way to make you feel better. I read it months ago and still feel better as a result. If you're interested in the concept of intuitive eating, you may want to read other, more definitive books first, but this one is a good and quick addition. If you could care less about intuitive eating, I'd still recommend this book.

Very helpful
I have enjoyed reading this book. It has helped me understand the connection between my brain (especially the emotional aspect) and food. I have lost about 150 lbs and And this book is helping me put the pieces together to loose my last 20-25 lbs.

I found this to be really unhelpful. I encouraged my disordered eating and didn't really explain my other options in terms of Intuitive Eating. I would suggest other books over this if you are struggling with Binge Eating, specifically the Intuitive Eating book and Body Positive Power

Absolutely loved this book
Absolutely loved this book. A real life changer. Geneen Roth's message is such common sense although I think it is hard to eat when you're hungry and stop whey you're full but I'm going to try. Her recommendation that we look at "real" women and not the media stereotypes is a great message. Being kind to yourself is also a good idea! Speaking from experience, diets definitely don't work long term. The news today advocates more funding being given to weight loss surgery on the NHS. I think Doctors should give their patients this book to read instead. Cheaper and makes much more sense.

kurzweilig geschrieben, geholfen hat es wenig
wenn man es als humorvollen Roman liest und ein zwei Dinge versucht zu implementieren, kann es einem zu mehr selbstliebe verhelfen

Really enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book 100%, I will read it again soon, and I will pass it on to my daughter to whom I've passed on my hatred of my body....shame on me. I will worship what God has given me from now on...no more diets for me ....THEY DO NOT WORK !!!!!! If they did we would not be started a NEW one every 6 months !!!

When you read this book, get comfy in your chair
A lovely, easy to read book. Lots of good ideas for eating with awareness. The sort of book you'll read through quickly and be able to take a few ideas to use easily in your own life. A great addition to books on Intuitive Eating, written with thought and care

Encourages thinness, not positive body image
I bought this book to help me feel more positive about my body, and to help get rid of my weight obsession. The back cover states that Geneen teaches fifty ways to feel gorgeous and powerful no matter what, however, read the whole book and you will see that the underlying message is that thinness is what will make you feel great. Her aim is to supposedly make you feel great no matter what your size. She says you may not be happy when you are thin. She says to get rid of 'thin' clothes in your wardrobe. She encourages you to wear a belt. There are so many contradictions in the book as well as comments which riled me such as (talking about a chat show host who wanted her on his show):"Anyone who speaks about weight loss, eats chocolate every day, and stays thin knows something other people deserve to know.", says the host. Yes she eats chocolate, but one square a day! If this is the only "bad" thing she eats, of course she'll be thin!? Again, this drives home the message that being thin is the route to happiness. Eating one square of chocolate a day will make you feel great? I think not. Very hypocritical. She says: "Your job is to do your best at all times", i.e. don't overeat, don't eat doughnuts, don't drink cola.If you want to feel great about yourself, do not buy this book. Instead try "Fat is a feminist issue" (if you are female obviously!.
