Not complete but complete
Even though the book is unfinished I gave it 5 stars. The characters feel real. For example, I have the same affliction that the main character has. The details made me think that Conan Doyle had the same affliction. I was surprised by the religion in the book. It is not preaching to you just a normal conversation. The writing made you feel like you were in the room with them just listening in. Also I would tell Mr. Smith not stalk. Read it and you will see. It is an easy read. I so wish this could be finished but obviously Conan Doyle is no longer with us and it would be a crime to have someone else try to finish it. It is perfect the way it is.I will tell you that if you want to read this because you saw this book on Criminal Minds, the book is not the same size as it is on the show.

Surprising insights
Some of the topics explored seem very advanced for the times in which the author lived. I listened to some parts the book more than once because I wanted to give his ideas a chance to sink in.

So-So
I'm a died-in-the-wool Sherlock Holmes fan... and decided to read this because; (1) it was written by Arthur Conan Doyle, and (2) it played a part in a very poignant "Criminal minds" episode (Mathew Grey Gubler's love)...I'm having trouble getting through it... not sure of its 'purpose'... it is sort of a stream of consciousness "Narrative" as the title suggests. I will struggle a bit further, but probably won't finish it.A disappointment.

Criminal minds.
Really beautiful book, which is much recommended to anyone who likes Mr. Doyle, or who got as sentimental as me after seeing Criminal minds season 8 ;)

Tough Read
The book is interesting as a counter-point to his other works. It has a tendency to wander and is somewhat confusing.I did enjoy the book and it was we'll worth the effort.

Five Stars
Great to read Sir Conan Doyle prior to his creating Sherlock Holmes.

... the writer emerging who had yet to pen his greatest works, but the foundation is there
One can see the writer emerging who had yet to pen his greatest works, but the foundation is there. The dry humor, the wit and the irascible style that could only lead to Sherlock. I rue it's premature end.

Conan Doyle's apprentice piece
Probably a book for bibliophiles or, at least, for dyed in the wool Conan Doyle fans - I plead guilty to both. It is a very interesting read giving more insights into Conan Doyle the man than into him as a writer, per se. We get his views on all sorts of social phenomena and moral issues. Sadly the story is unfinished - there are five chapters more or less complete and partially revised and there's about a page and a half of chapter six which ends during the opening of a disquisition on white blood corpuscles between John Smith and his doctor. I found this a fascinating read, finding many of Conan Doyle's opinions show how far his thinking was in advance of that of many of his contemporaries. Excellent notes and introduction - especially good at cross referencing ideas, dialogue and situations that appear in later work such as the Holmes canon and the Professor Challenger stories. A sort of insight into the great man's struggles toward the major works that would follow.

molto interessante
un libricino curioso, interessante scoprire cosa scrisse il grande Conan Doyle nel suo primo manoscritto all'età di 23 anni. Da leggere, in lingua inglese si apprezzano delle sfumature e una certa sottile ironia divertente.
