German Meals at Oma's: Traditional Dishes for the Home Cook

Great cookbook
A ton of recipes in the book. The book is divided by region of Germany versus being divided by appetizer, main, side, etc. Which unfortunately makes it a little hard to find recipes I want to make, but I wouldn’t remove a star for that. If you’re looking at add German recipes to your personal collection of thinks you can make, this book is worth it.

I love Oma’s great recipes!

Every recipe is authentic. I’m a chef. My German friends tell me this is exactly how “Oma” made it.
Buy this book. It’s the real deal.

Excellent, approachable cookbook
This is a very well written cookbook. The pictures are lovely, the instructions are easy to follow, and there are no typos, which I always appreciate. I particularly liked how the dishes are divided by region and the author provides tips on ingredients and preparation and background and history on the various regional cuisines, which as a third generation American I would be too far removed to know. So far I've made the Konigsberger Klopse (meatballs in caper sauce), twice. I didn't know what to expect since I'd never eaten the dish before, but they were delicious. My husband liked the dish so much he asked me to make it again in the same week! Overall I love this cookbook and I think I'm going to get a lot of regular use out of it over the years to come. I hope the author will follow this worthy volume up with a second one on desserts and German baking because this book contains exclusively mains and side dishes. I like her style and think a volume on desserts and baking would be equally well done and easy to follow.

Authentic with lots of little tidbits
Absolutely the best german cookbook I came across. Lots of memories with these dishes that I grew up with. Thanks, Oma!

I looked up 3 recipes and they are very similar to my Oma's
The königsberger klopse was nearly identical except my Oma added a little basil to the meatballs. The rouladen is what i do. So many recipes in other books add all these weird ingredients that I guess is to make the dish harder to make but seem more exciting to people. My Oma got her recipes from her mother and those were refined for simple ingredients because in post WWi Germany, they simply were not available. Most German food comes from simple ideas. For instance, it was nice to see sauerbraten made with minimal ingredients instead of adding silly things like gingersnaps. My Oma would have had a fit if you took a perfectly good cookie and added it to the marinade. I have no idea what that's all about. My recipe has more cloves though. I look forward to making other dishes from this cook book as i feel I'm getting authentic (at least to my family line) German food. The only thing I would have preferred was a spiral bound book that would open flat.

Simply spectacular!
The media could not be loaded. Every single dish is exactly like my Oma used to cook. Love this book. You would be surprised how common German cuisine is in USA :)Lots of grilled potatoes, beef, veggies, mashed potatoes, sausages, bacon, etc

Beautiful Book, Authentic Recipes!
If you want to cook like Granny did, but not sure how, this is for you! If you already cook like Granny did, this is for you! It's a heartwarming tour of Germany's regional foods, typically heavy on potatoes. My ancestry is nearly 100% German, so the food is what I grew up loving. Can't recommend this book highly enough. Author includes many helpful tips and hacks to ensure the authenticity of your results. Gorgeous photo with each recipe! When I saw the photo of liver, onions, and apples I almost fainted! It was like my beloved Granny had proudly snapped that photo! I almost cried! Okay I'm gushing. But if you have even a passing interest in German food, BUY THIS BOOK! You will not be disappointed!

Disappointed!!!
Having a German mother, she made some amazing food when I was growing up. She would bake some gorgeous cakes and we had a lot of German tasty dishes. My eldest daughter loves to cook and bake and has done some of the dishes my mother taught her so seeing this German cook book I thought she would be able to take us all back in time as my mother now has dementia and has been unable to cook for a long time now but I was very disappointed with the recipes in this book and only recognised a couple of things that I remember my Oma making. Wished I’d not bothered with buying this as I feel I’ve wasted my money tbh.

Real german recipes
I've really enjoyed this woman's website for recipes for a while now, and have been really impressed by her recipe book. Both myself, my father, and my Austrian mother-in-law recognize recipes from our childhoods. I'll note that I also purchased a book called Gourmet Pilgrim: Germany, and that seemed mostly to be complex recipes chosen for their "hipness", rather than anything I grew up eating. So it's really nice to get a recipe book which actually has real, and easy-to-cook meals that myself and my Prussian forebears grew up eating. Danke Gerhilde! :)
