fun book for 3-8 year olds
A little abstract but still a fun way to introduce these biology topics. The pictures and text were a bit too busy for me and my kids.

I gave this book as a gift to a 9 year old boy who'd just had surgery for his 2nd broken leg, and it was a huge hit--not only with the boy, but his parents said it was a book they thought hospitals should have for their pediatric orthopedic unit.

Used? Thought I was buying new.
Um, what? I did no just pay $26.35 for a USED library book.Nowhere in the description did it state this was going to be used. I was under the impression I would be receiving a new book. So very disappointed.

Fun that grows with your child
My son loves this series- makes complicated concepts accessible and fun. As he gets older, there are sections we can add when we read the book.

This is a perfect book to give to the child who has broken a bone so they will understand the fantastic healing process!
When you broke a bone, let's say your arm, it was a real crisis and crying time for sure! The trip to your doctor's office or the hospital was pretty hurried and the pain you felt was intense. After the X-rays the doctor probably talked to you and your parent or caretaker and told you what kind of a fracture it was, how long it would take to heal, and other general instructions. If they told you that you had something like a greenstick fracture or a bowing fracture, you may not have any idea what they are they are talking about or even care when you are in pain. So what exactly happens when that bone is healing?Don't worry, you'll heal in time. The six superheroes involved in this process are called osteoblasts, blood cells, neutrophils, macrophages, fibroblasts and stem cells. You have two different kinds of bones. One is called compact or cortical bone (the tough hard one) and the other is called spongy bone (this can be found inside compact bones.) When you break a bone, blood, the first superhero, rushes to the scene when your "damaged bone cells give off a chemical that is a signal to the rest of the body that help is needed." As you learn about this complicated healing process, you can actually see what is going on with fantastic photomicrographs that were "taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM)." At each stage in your healing process you will know exactly what is going on in your body . . . maybe even as much as the doctor does! When a child breaks a bone it can lead to short-term stress and he or she can become very upset. This book is very well written and can be just the thing to soothe the mental processing as well as give your child the understanding of what is going on in his or her body. The cartoon superheroes are appealing and will draw in even the most reluctant reader. The photomicrographs are an excellent introduction to microbiology. In the back of the book there is a glossary, an index and additional recommended books and websites. This is one in a series of six Body Battlefields books. This is the perfect book to give to the youngster who has broken a bone!

Excellent book!
My friends 10 yr old had an accident breaking his hand and his hip. He has an arm cast and a body cast. I wanted something designed for him to understand the healing process. I went to visit and his mom showed me the book. It was perfect! I wouldn't recommend to kids under 8. It's colorful and interesting. A great gift for any child dealing with a broken bone!
