Rock of Love: Season 1

Addicted To This Series!
I first watched this on VH1 when I just stumbled upon it while channel surfing and the second episode was on. For whatever reason, I was hooked right away! I ended up watching re-runs of the first episode to see what I missed, and tuned in for every single episode thereafter.I was in high school when Poison was at the peak of their career and, although I did listen to some of their songs, I wasn't exactly a "die hard" Poison fan. I didn't hate 'em or anything, I just didn't get what the big deal was about big-haired, pink lipstick wearing Bret Michaels - LOL. But this reality series shows different sides of him, and very different fans (as well as girls on the show who weren't fans as they never even heard his music). Now I certainly don't believe the entire series was "unscripted" at all. I didn't think Bret would find his one true love using this "method" either. But it WAS just fun to watch! Seeing these girls compete in various challenges for dates was quite entertaining. At the same time, I don't believe the entire series WAS "scripted" either. The girls competing to win had numerous ups & downs and I do think a few of them were sincere and, when stuff got to them, their tears were real. I could only imagine what living in that house was like... and I must admit that I don't think some of these women had enough talent to pull off "acting" throughout the series anyway. Not trying to put them down, I'm just saying I think certain ones weren't crying or fighting "for the cameras" only. You see girls who obviously truly like Bret and want to be with him and I do believe he DID make a connection with some of them (though not enough to turn their relationship into a marriage or even long term boyfriend/girlfriend committment). You also see girls who are beautiful, some wild and some more laid back. Some are hilarious while others are airheads & annoying. With Bret Michaels being "the bachelor" here though, it was bound to be a wild ride! Whether you like him or not, he IS a very successful musician and although I'm not one of them, many girls DO believe he's the "hottest" rock star ever (or at least during the "big haired 80's bands era). The vindictive & manipulative Lacey was one girl on the show I couldn't stand. Even if she IS truly a nice a person "off camera" and was playing it up and playing along for the cameras, her antitcs did get quite irritating after awhile. As far as being unrated, I honestly didn't give it much thought when I ordered it. It IS still censored as cuss words are still bleeped out, just like when it aired on TV, and certain exposed girls' body parts are still blurred out. But you do still know what was said when a swear word was bleeped (or what was shown when a part of the body was blurred!) The guys just gotta use their imagination when it comes to that I guess! But other than a few girls being topless, I can't recall any other "blurs." I didn't really care about the bleeping of the swearing either since, as I said, you know what they're saying anyway. I CAN, however, understand someone being upset if they ordered this under the impression that it was completely uncensored though.I didn't really get into Season Three, but I do hope Season Two is released soon! The first season IS my favorite, however. One of my fave episodes is the music competition as I thought Sam did an EXCELLENT job with the lyrics to her song. But I WAS hoping Jess & Brandy would win. The way they ROCKED that competition was so adorable and original! I also enjoyed the episode with the football challenge since I did end up liking Jess & she became one of my fave girls on the show. She's one heck of an athlete! And, of course, the episode with the parents visiting... MY GAWD! The long awaited fight that pursued between Heather & Lacey was one thing but having Lacey's father of all people in the middle of it all, being the way that he is, well, like I said, MY GAWD! I did enjoy the episode when they went to Vegas as well. Oh, and with regard to THAT one, another thing I don't think was scripted was when after one girl passed out completely drunk at the dinner table, another girl began vomiting right into her napkin. (Ahhh, the glamorous life of dating a rock star!) LOL.I didn't take this show seriously as far as it being a COMPLETELY REAL reality series, but I do think quite a bit of it WAS real. And I certainly didn't take the fact that Bret was really going to find the love of his life from this group of girls that he was "living with" for a short period of time & getting to know. But it was fun to watch, had a lot of funny moments and, again, I just became addicted to it to the point that I ended up having to have the series on DVD! Not because I was a huge Bret Michaels "super fan" or because I took the entire show seriously and believed it was all true, but just because it was simply highly entertaining to me.

"What's a goin' on!"
I have to admit that normally I hate trash TV and reality dating shows. But I have been a Poison fan since I was in elementary school so I was stoked a couple of years ago when I heard the one and only Bret Michaels was going to star in his own reality show. This is trash TV at its best, er, worst, well, both...depending on one's point of view. RoL is my one guilty pleasure and actually, I don't really feel guilty at all! This is trash TV at its worst because (with the exception of a couple of the ladies) these are some of the most shameless women ever shown on television and it is astonishing what they will do to get a piece of Bret! This is trash TV at its best because it is downright addicting! No matter how ditzy and slutty some of these chicks seem to be, you actually do grow to like some of them and it's totally fun to look forward to what they will do next.Bret Michaels will likely come off as kind of a tool to some but he is so genuine and comfortable with who he is that you cannot help but like him, too. No matter what his lifestyle is like and what shenanigans he participates in or what people say about him and how they judge him he really is a likable guy and has never pretended to be anything other than what he is. He has the perfect personality for our world of reality TV which is probably the biggest reason this show was wildly successful. He is funny, silly and just plain watchable! As far as all of the negative reviews in regards to the censored bits: there is not one indication anywhere on the packaging or on the description of this DVD set online that states it is "uncensored." I am not sure why people are so angry about it being supposedly falsely advertised because nowhere does it state that the set is "uncensored." Unrated yes, in teeny writing on the back, but TV shows do not have ratings the way movies do, so all I can say is I guess some people do not understand the difference between the words "censor" and "rate." Personally, I like bleeped out eff words--I find it more effective than hearing "&%$#" every ten seconds, but I guess that's just me...As far as the packaging and discs themselves go, it is all high quality. Discs are in individual cases which is nice, the menus are simple and there is a play-all feature. There are several special features including an uncut/uncensored bit of the phone sex challenge, an extended bit of the food fight, "HeatherCam" as well as a sing-a-long and music video.Overall I love this show and the DVDs, but unless you found the show re-watchable when it aired (as VH1 aired reruns several times a week) you probably won't benefit from purchasing this set.

If You Ever Wondered What the Girls Did When Not On Stage Climbing A Pole....Here's Your Answer
The moment I saw that you could get this show on DVD finally, I knew that it was a MUST have! I am not one to buy DVD's or TV shows, unless they really speak to me and this one REALLY speaks to me. This show is a MUST see for any human being. It may get a little weird or questionable at times, but just go with it. This will help ANYONE that's feeling a little sad or in a deep depression because they will realize that it could be worse!

hilarious, inappropriate, entertaining and total reality tv
I loved the show when it was on originally. I think this season was the most genuine with the girls. Obviously the fact that a bunch of women fighting over a man is hilarious and impractical. The only upsetting thing to me was that Bret wasn't able to watch the film of the girls during the season while he wasn't around because if he had seen the film, he definitely would have sent home different girls. Other than that, this show was laid over very well. Pardon the pun.

Reality schlock at it's finest
Amazing. I typically hate reality TV, but dating shows are my guilty pleasure. Blind Date, Shipmates, Fifth Wheel, you name it. But this is one of the best. Star struck tramps competing to win a "relationship" with someone like Bret Michaels... The catfights, the backstabbing. Pure magic.
