Missed the Mark
I like the premise of this book, but it somehow missed the mark. Aside from numerous repetitions (I really don't need to get hit over the head), AFAIC, the ending was awful. Killing off the main person to which I felt connected, in a totally illogical situation, ruined the book for me. I guess that shock takes precedence over reason as a means of transitioning into the next novel in the series, but that doesn't work for me.

Someone needed an editor to tell the author to rewrite the ending
This book was fun, interesting, had some interesting characters, etc. Overall, if I was writing about the first 80% of the book it was mid 4 star. But the ending is almost a 1 star for me. Its bad. Its very, very bad. Things happen not because they make sense, but because the author wanted to setup a major subversion of expectations. And that is clear with how he wrote the ending. The funny thing is that i'm reminded of a story I found on the web years ago, which had a similar "we found a spaceship" motif. That one ends with the main character away from Earth trying to set up a new base as an Earth based government nukes his current base because "if we can't have the tech, no one can". It upset me then as was a very anticlimactic ending. The one here may actually be worse in some ways. Its not a bad read, but the ending really was off-putting for me so I give it a low 3 star.

Stellar new series! Can't wait for each new installment! Lots of room to grow!
After reading current top critical review, I had to go back and re-read Book 1 (after having first read 1 then 2 then critical review). Can't really understand the negative reviews. This is excellent story telling, believable premise that it's not at all hard to suspend disbelief to entertain. Well worth your time and effort. SPOILER:SPOILER:SPOILER:The end of Book 1 "Legacy" comes out of nowhere and steals your breath away! The nerve! The gall! This author kills off our hero and looks like our heroine too! WTF?! BUT, seriously, take a deep breath. Do you believe the Alliance is going to fail upon this horrible loss? Really? NO, of course not. These people our hero/heroine collected to their cause, this Alliance they've formed is by no means ended. The human species' future is at stake. The survivors BELIEVE and KNOW that they must persevere, however much their hearts ache. AND THEY DO.... And in Book 2 "Spheres of Influence" we see the Alliance move on from this tragedy....and then ANOTHER SPOILER:ANOTHER SPOILER:ANOTHER SPOILER:...and then the Alliance learns that Simon is NOT dead! He survived! And Kitty is not dead, she's in alien healing chamber getting healed. And after some interesting drama, the Alliance recovers Simon, and proceeds on the path Simon and Kitty started them down. And Lucy is WONDERFUL! Great job, Author! Seriously great story, can't wait for next installment!

Outstanding new series
The book needs some good editing but I can overlook that because of the great plot and character development. The characters come alive as people you know around you and have their quirks and foibles. I tend to appreciate the story and unless the flaws completely overwhelm the readability, I will ignore them and just enjoy the book. I have been reading science fiction for over 60 years and have seen some incredibly talented writers appear in the last 10 years with the advent of self publishing of ebooks. Despite the lack of the finer points of publishing such as good editing, this venue has allowed talent to rise and will, with time get their details resolved to everyone's satisfaction. Carry on!

An exciting new space saga
Legacy is the first book in Bob Mauldin's Stellar Heritage Series. This installment follows the early formation of the Terran Alliance. Beginning with the circumstances that lead to the Hawkes possession of a super advanced alien spacecraft and following their plan to expand and protect this invaluable resource for the benefit of humanity. They face dangers from Earth and beyond. While much of the story is world-building, it contains plenty of action, adventure, and intrigue, with complex and compelling characters. I recommend this book to current and new science fiction fans.

WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK?
I bought the book and like it. I have been reading sci fi for years, so I have little patience with authors who can't world build, don't have interesting characters and a decent plot. Bob Mauldin hit the mark on all three. So, now I am waiting for the second book in the series. Hope it won't be too long a wait.

I am really disappointed
I gave this book a 3 not because of the writing but because of the ending.Spoiler alertI hate books that invest in the main character throughout the book and then kill them in the end. It makes no sense to me. I want to read the next book because you made me like them. That is the reason a reader stays with you. Well you just lost me as a reader. I read for entertainment and I love the hero. You ruined that for me. This is more of a war book where all the good guys die. I hate those!!!

Plausible first in a sequel...kind of fun I could imagine being possible for me
Well thought through on the plausible premise of "sabotaging a colony building factory ship"...and it falls into the hands of 3 agile humans in vacation. It plods on, at times, and delivers the usual rants about crimes and inept politicians... But it delivers, and aside from the abrupt ( and maybe not so ) ending, I look forward to reading the sequel... With less "filler"
