This book was the perfect explanation for my grandson who is fascinated by the creation of art by chiseling stone.

Michelangelo’s David is such a well-known masterpiece that I always thought it was his idea from the first chip of marble. Not so! Sutcliffe sets just the right tone to engage readers in the fascinating tale of this stone “troublemaker” that stumped numerous artists for nearly forty years before Michelangelo saw his David in the massive block. Shelley’s detailed, colorful illustrations are a masterpiece themselves, each demanding a closer look. An inspiring book for the artist in everyone.

Beautiful drawings. Very well explained. My children loved it. They even took it to school and their teacher read it to all their class.

I found it at the library and liked it. The book explains with accuracy the story of how the David was made in a way that can still be understood by a child.

Great book to share with children over 8. Younger kids might not be as taken with story or pictures.

Michaelangelo's David comes to glorious life in this marvelous picture book page-turner. Kids will gather with the people of Florence to discover just what Michaelangelo did with that old, weather-worn marble block, the stone giant.

What a wonderful book! I was amazed how much my boys liked this story and how it got them to ask all sorts of questions related to art history.
