The Year At Maple Hill Farm

I remember reading this book to my brother, and the out-of-print copy (in good enough shape to give as a birthday present to his daughter, and really enjoying the art, back in the late 70's and early 80's. It might feel a little dated now, with the subdued colors, earthy style and lack of technology more complicated than a farm truck depicted, but it's also restful. I think, when my niece is a little older, and can make it out to our place in the country, she'll learn to appreciate this as a bedtime book.

This is a nice book that explains changes in nature through a look at farm life. Month by month we see what both domestic and wild animals are doing, and how some of the vegetation changes as well. The only thing keeping me from giving it a full five stars is that it’s sometimes not obvious if the story reads across the two-page spread or if it reads fully on the left page before going to the right page. The writing is a tad dry to me at some points, but my small children love it just the same.

Bought this for my 4 year old grandson. I haven’t given it to him yet, but It is written so cute and the illustrations are lovely.

This book is a great one to get for kids to go through seasons and different types of animals. My 4,3, and 2 year old lost interest after a couple of pages. I think we will just focus on one month per day. Since each page is a different month and has so much info.

I just love this kids book! I grew up on a farm and the pictures and stories are very realistic. I hate reading books where it is so obvious the author and/or illustrator really don't know what they are talking about, and never experienced farm life.

This an amazing book for teachers and parents. It walks children through the seasons of the year on a farm, incorporating information about animal, the weather, and feelings. It is a true vintage gem and I will be buying extra copies for gifts. So simple yet beautiful.

This is such a beautifully written book. I love it. I used to read it to my kids back in the 80s and 90s as they were growing up and so I had to get one for my grands; and they love it too. Great simple book to read that sparks imagination and provides tons of interesting and detailed pictures to add to the story time and conversations afterwards. My kids used to love to just talk about the pictures, and there is plenty of content for you to ask them to find this or that on the page, or spark conversations and stir up their interest about animals, farm life, nature and the seasons.

I insist on keeping this book even though my children are grown and gone. I love rereading it as an adult. The pages are full of thoughtful details and colors; the book captures well the events and emotions of the four seasons on a farm.This is my go-to-book when thinking of baby shower gifts. I know it's too old for an infant, but I like the book so much I want to make sure it is on my friend's bookshelf, waiting.

4y old son loving the content and illustrations.. and suddenly fascinated by when his fave tractors will be doing what jobs as he gets to grips with the year and he has also delighted himself working out which month each member of the family has their birthday in... lovely to be able to enjoy such this book and watch him making these discoveries.

This is a beautifully illustrated book but people should be aware that hunting with hounds is mentioned which may not be thought suitable for all children. I have decided not to send it to the child who it was intended for.

Ah ... this is a really lovely children's book which works well in other languages too (I have a french version as well as an english one) and a book you'll love to read and mull over with the kids on rainy days. Suprisingly detailed too and one that is often used to teach small kids about farming.

Love the detail and quality of the art work. Would prefer hardback but we will enjoy this anyway. It is a book we used to get a the library and we checked it out over and over as was my daughter's favorite book.

A beautiful book, illustrated without whimsy. It's good to see a children's book that depicts animals as they are. The recipient loves it!
