Merriam-Webster Children's Dictionary, New Edition: Features 3,000 Photographs and Illustrations

It’s a heavy book, similar in size to Encyclopaedia volumes but incredibly engaging for a child to read. It has a great mixture of words both simple and complex for ages up to approx 10 years of age (for a child with good reading level skills but easily bored with the old fashioned dictionary types!) It’s also a good general resource with maps, flags, grammar reference points etc.

This is a high quality and beautifully presented book, which I am sure most children would love. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is simply that it is so big, it is difficult, in practice, for my child to use. It weighs a lot and takes up a fair bit of space. Perhaps this is what is to be expected for a children’s dictionary, while adults use much smaller versions. However, it does mean that in practice we don’t use it as much as I think we should.

The book is great, Amazon UK is not. I bought this wonderful book for my niece in Sweden. As it turns out, Amazon UK was very happy to take my money for postage, when all the time there was an Amazon Sweden available. At no point did Amazon UK alert me to this situation. They happily, and deceptively, took my money to pay for the products AND postage.

Just the right balance of pictures to entries. I deal for a child in late Primary / early Secondary

Perhaps a little on the heavy side for a 6 year old, but she loves it.

I personally like this dictionary. It is easy to read and comes with lots of pictures which my son really likes. Also has letter tabs on the right that are color coordinated to help find words faster.

Es sin duda un diccionario que no debe de faltar en la biblioteca de tu hogar.

This dictionary is beautiful - the pictures are great, it contains maps, explanations of the features and pronunciations. There is a reference section in the back that contains maps with descriptions of various countries and cultures, flags of the world, and being an American dictionary, it contains the states of USA and Presidents. My only criticism might be that it is extremely heavy for small kids to use, as it is 8.5" x 10" x 2.5" and weighs several pounds. Still, it is a lovely book and would be a great resource for children for years to come.
