Fantastic effects pedal
Fantastic effects pedal. I really wanted to use this to get lo-fi, funky vibrato sounds over high gain, but it never really worked that well for me. I was running it in front of an amp, however, and I think it would have made a big difference if it ran through the effects loop instead. Clean compression is spanky and shiny as it should be. The chorus mode is among the best I've heard, very lush with lots of warmth. The lo-fi mode is incredible in the right application.I had a lot of luck running it into Amplitube in my DAW, getting lots of gritty rock lead and rhythm tones a la Steppenwolf, Led Zep, and Jimmy Page. Seriously, running this thing in lo-fi mode without vibrato is one of my favorite sounds. Using it in lo-fi mode with subtle (or even not-so-subtle) vibrato calls up classic Univibe tones with all of the glory of the lo-fi grit you would hear on an aged tape recording. I liked using it to make melancholy tracks really sag with a broken feel.Using it through louder amps was another story altogether. At gig-worthy volumes, most of the lo-fi character that the pedal delivers would be lost. Natural compression from a high gain tube amp going through vintage 30s combined with this pedal sort of squashed it too much. There is definitely a certain character that it possesses, but I wasn't into it and felt like any sound I was getting through it was either too harsh or too dark, although much could be attributed to the amplifier. I'm sure that if you're using this with a quality boutique amp for recording sessions it'll be fine, but outside of the more extreme chorus and vibrato effects, there's not a whole lot of perceived difference in sound with a humbucker loaded guitar. Maybe it sounds better with a Strat? No idea.If you're looking for killer studio sounds, this is a great pickup. If you're running low to mid gain for whatever it is you're doing, this is perfect. However, it ended up being relegated to the status of "expensive specialty tool" when I was running it with a band. I still really think this is a great pedal, as almost all ZVEX pedals tend to be, and would gladly pick another one up for the right price on a whim.

Boards of Zvex
This is often and aptly called “Boards of Canada” in a box: it produces that uncanny warble, hiss and drone that you associate with BoC, and it does it very well and very easily. But the BoC tone is only one shade of this pedal’s palette- there are compression, chorus, and trem effects that can be wrung out of this pedal, too. And for an experimenter’s pedal, the controls are very intuitive. Love this pedal, love this company.

Does one thing well.
Not a very versatile pedal, I ended up returning it. If your looking for exactly what it is, great, but you won’t get much else. I really wanted a clean vibrato, but if you use the 100% vibrato setting it has to also be “lofi” (aka muddy with the highs rolled off quite a bit), and if you mix in any clean tone it will be a chorus instead, plus use compression.

Fun to use
It’s definitely good if you want an obscure filtered sound.

Does more than one thing.
Pleasantly surprised by the different sounds you can get. You get a slap compression when hard panned left on the comp/lofi knob. You get a nice chorus sound when partially blending in the lofi setting. I like the different vibrato options too. This is a really fun pedal, especially when you're playing jazz chords.
