A big website advertisement disguised as an English book
To explain how bad this book is I have reviewed and summarized every single chapter for you:- In chapters 1-4, AJ only talks about how hard English is and how nobody teaches it right. The only "lesson" in the first 4 chapters is to take "energy breaks" between 20-30 minutes. You can apply almost everything in this book to learning Chinese, it's complete nonsense.- On page 48 there's a new lesson - he suggests you learn vocabulary by shouting it out loud instead of calmly reading it. Every page in this chapter is like this. Again on page 49, he's asking you to find energetic music that you love.- Chapter 6 is a bulleted list of goals. Still no English lessons. Here's stuff like "I want to inspire people!" Seriously.- Chapter 7, you're going to think I'm making this up, but he's talking about thinking of happy thoughts to enhance your memory. Seriously?! And then he talks about teaching in other countries, life experiences, yadda yadda.- Chapter 8, he talks about how he thinks babies learn english from parents better than adults learn English in classrooms? Ok. Thanks?- Chapter 9, he suggests you learn phrases, not words. Again, this is true of learning any language. Great for Chinese, Thai, whatever. Here AJ had a chance to give a list of the most useful phrases an English learner should start with, but instead there's less than 10 random examples like "he hates ice cream". Again, he suggests you buy his online program to learn more.- Chapter 10, he suggests you don't study grammar for six months, and that will somehow improve your English. What?- Chapter 11 - and this is the chapter with the most useful information, he suggests you download audio books for your level of English. And then there's an advertisement for his Twitter and Show. He then suggests you rewind your favorite english movie a few times. Wow.- Chapter 12 - this one is hilarious: he asks you to repeat difficult things over 100 times so you remember them. There are actually two exercises in this chapter. On page 104 he says you should find 10 minutes of English (he doesnt supply any) and you should repeat whatever that is for a week, and then on exercise 2 he says to listen to that same recording and copy the tone. I'm tempted to go try this and teach myself Mandarin this week. Again, this is NOT an English lesson in any shape way or form. - Chapter 13 - OH MY WE FOUND IT. Wow, on page 110 we finally have an example of something that resembles an English lesson. He wrote the same story in future, past and present. I can't say anything bad about this chapter, this is smart -- and also like what you find in any elementary grammar textbook. Ok, you earned one star! There is an English lesson in this book, we found it at last!- Chapter 14 - haha, he couldn't resist and we're back to an advertisement about his podcast, followed by advice to read stuff like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Unbelievable. That's what he said, it's right there on page 122. Horrible.- Chapter 15 - He suggests that you should invent a short story and then ask questions about it ... which almost starts to look like an English lesson is about to happen .... and then ... BOOM advertisement about a free sample chapter on his paid website program. After you download that you can read along with this chapter. I think its great when authors offer audio companions to support their books, but it's sleazy when it's a bait and switch to buy the actual lessons this book should have contained. We're by page 135 and look at how little we've learned so far.- Chapter 16 - Oh damn, looks like he's run out of things to say. That was it. He's starting to wrap it up, talking about buying his online program for at least six months. See page 142. How is this a chapter?- Chapter 17 - OMFG YOU GUYS he's suggesting the Hardy Boys and Nancy again and how fun it is to read. Look at page 148. Hahaha! What!!!This is the worst book about English a person can buy. It's not even about English! This book is actually about getting yourself in a good mood and then buying his online English class for more money. There is very little information in this book.- Chapter 18 - This chapter seems completely paraphrased from Hemingway's famous advice on how to edit your own writing, which to be fair he makes reference to on page 150. No english lessons here. None. Page 155 says write every day. My French can improve if I write French everyday, too.- Chapter 19 - It's about his time in Korea and how he thinks speaking at first is a bad idea. Uh, ok? Nothing here, just personal stories. Cool.- Chapter 20 - It's a story about how English is important for business. Yep, he totally ran out of ideas. I'm starting to miss chapter 13.- Chapter 21 - Titled "How to give powerful English speaking presentations" which goes into some bizarre rant about the "psychology of fear" and "converting fear into power". Suddenly this is a self-help book about your social anxieties. And English ... somewhere back! But not in this chapter.- Chapter 22 - Another commercial. On pages 180-181, with a sales pitch about his VIP program, which the kind of language you hear on late night television about weight loss. It also says scary stuff like "we monitor our club quite closely" and "we have zero tolerance". I'm starting to understand why this book has so many high reviews. I bet he's going to try to get this negative highly detailed review removed. *makes a text backup*- Chapter 23 - The terms of use for his website and then he calls his customers a family. A family that hasn't learned any English yet unless they sign up for his online course for at least six months!I'm living this used car salesman calls himself an english teacher. Here you have it broken down by chapter - this guy totally winged it and people are falling for it. Don't give this man another dollar. I feel so bad for people who have fallen for this. While there is some merit to what he says, the fact that none of the lessons he suggests are actually contained in the book (they're on his paid online program, maybe?!) you're still going to need to go out and get real English materials after you buy this book. The book as zero substance. It is like reading a self help book or listening to Tony Robbins type information. I went through the book expecting some type of advice on how to teach English to my students in Puerto Rico and it was chapter after chapter of psychology type information. This guy really pulled of a book with zero information on anything relevamt to what you would expect given the title and genre. It does give you some good tidbits on why schools and English programs fail. If you want policy type information, the start of the book is ok with that! Otherwise, complete rip off.

The charismatic genial A.J.Hodge has done a perfect job in introducing his useful methods for achieving a high fluency in the English language. Self-confidence is a major key to success. Overcoming psychological barriers is indispensible . Listening and reading are the keystones to attaining high proficiency - no doubt. Yet I have some mild reservations regarding A.J.Hoge sweeping remarks about school methods practised in general. Are schools always to blame ? Do they always want their pupils to be passive and inactive during lessons rather than being lively and responsive ? As far as I remember some of my teachers were very enthusiastic about having their pupils talking English in class. Most of them did not like an indifferent class . Is grammar teaching that obssesive as A.J.Hodge claims it to be ? I'm not sure. Although we did study grammar in a way that might be considered tedious in some way ( especially in the low grades of elementary school ) , a great amount of English teaching was focused on stories ,vocabulary, and expressing yourself. Another aspect that must be mentioned is that pupils , in many cases , lack motivation- not that school methods are that bad ! But certainly , I must admit , frontal teaching is not as good as the methods presented in this book. Nice enlightening read !

Overrated and do not waste your money
Not a worth for your money. He just listed too much redundant information to fill pages to sell the book. I do not understand why this book is rated so high. Overrated and do not waste your money.

A bit disappointing
This book wasn't much use to me. If I was learning English I don't think it would be helpful as It assumes the user already knows English.

Ok but very spammy.
I'm a native English speaker so I bought this book to see if it can help me with Japanese. It's ok, but it's very American. It pushes the hard sell a lot. Almost every third paragraph mentions his brand etc. For us non American's, this really begins to grate. By chapter 4, I was getting wound up! The first two chapters deal with what's wrong with traditional education. Then it moves onto a good section on goals. Next we move onto his "technique" (insert brand name and TM). He does make some good points but a lot of the same points can be found online. For example the website AJATT and Japanese Level Up cover a lot of these techniques. His Anthony Robbins, NLP techniques were ok, and he does make some valid learning points. 3.5 / 5 is about right for me.

Simply Great
WOWWWW!The book was amazing. The author knows how English is being taught all over the world since he has been teaching English for 20 years. He knows the flaws in teaching methods. In this book, the author tells about 7 rules which we can apply to learn the English language. He says Psychology of students or people is more important in learning the English language. Our limiting beliefs also act as a barrier to learn the English language. In this book Author even tells what we should do to change our limiting beliefs. He says the English language is not a subject to be studied but a skill to be developed. The 7 rules author tells about are very practical.we can apply those rules to learn English or any other language. If you want to learn English or any other language you should read this book.

AJ amazing coach
For a long time I learned English in classroom environment with the old lecture method. It was terrible experience for me.As you know I studied a lot of grammar rules and very long list vocabulary.I realized that the traditional method "don't work".One day I decided to find better way to learn English.Eventually I discovered "Effortless English".I adapt this strategy. Now I speak English confidently and enjoy my learning.I love it.This is part of my life.I highly recommend this book.
