These other lights have all ranged from a true 1200 to 3500 lumens and I have been more than happy with these products by Cygoli
I have been a light enthusiast for several years now. I have spent $1000's on high quality bike lights, flashlights, etc. These other lights have all ranged from a true 1200 to 3500 lumens and I have been more than happy with these products by Cygolite, Fenix, and others. So when I was in the market to find a powerful head lamp for night hiking, I thought the high price tag and the claim of 1200 true lumens with this Lupine Piko headlamp was the right choice. The first bad experience with this Lupine product was that I ordered the HD headband with my purchase. A sales associate at Lupine contacted me and said that they did not have any of the HD headbands in stock. His solution was that they would ship the unit with the standard headband, then mail me the HD headband that I paid for a couple weeks later when they became available. Well, it's now about 4 months later and I never received the HD headband, nor did I ever hear anything back from Lupine. No big deal that lupine never followed up on their promise. After all, it's the quality of the light that is most important to me. I have been using this headlamp for 4 months now, and all I can say is that it is nothing but a major disappointment. Is it 1200 lumens bright? The answer is yes, for only the first few minutes. Due to the tiny size of the lamp unit, it builds up heat very fast. Within minutes, the unit scales down the brightness to protect the internals from heat damage. The tiny head unit is so ineffective at dissipating heat, that it has to reduce the lumen output to what seems to be about 300 lumens. It's a pathetic light after it lowers it's output due to heat.I have experience with several high output lights, and they all throttle back a bit when too much heat builds up. All the other lights I have owned (Cygolite Triden X, Fenix RC 40, etc) will scale back slightly after about 20 minutes at room temperature, and never when being using in cold air. This Lupin Piko drops down to a pathetic 300-500 lumin output even in single digit Colorado winter weather. The cold air keeps the peak output going a little longer than a few minutes, but it's still inexcusable that the lamp power drops to such degree even with cold weather usage. So with this Lupine Piko X7 headlamp, you essentially pay $400+ for a head lamp that gives you a few minutes of a "wow that's nice and bright" experience, then it throttles itself down to the brightness of a $30 head lamp.Normally I am very good about spending my money wisely, and getting a nice product after extensive research. I have to say that this Lupine headlamp is one of the worst purchases I have ever made, and it makes me feel sick that I paid the money that I did for it.If you are in the market for a headlamp, look elsewhere. Make sure that the headlamp has a large enough size to effectively dissipate the heat. This Lupine headlamp as it is has major design flaws and turns out to not be any better in performance than a $30 lamp.
