Outstanding and Comprehensive
I probably have 15 embroidery guides, and though I was wary of this one at first (due to the lack of photographs), it has turned out to be the best of them all. It does not have pictures of stitches; instead it has drawings and most importantly, the stitches are shown from both the front of the fabric and the back. This is an incredibly useful feature, especially for the beginner or intermediate trying to work the stitches correctly and from the right direction and angle. The organization is clear and logical. Stitches are grouped into families and variations are labeled explicitly. Stitch instructions, remarks, and notes are uniformly helpful and well-written.I have the Kindle edition and use it constantly. The only negative that I can think of is that the index at the back has no hyperlinks or page/location references.Recommended enthusiastically as a learning tool and reference guide.

Give this book a chance.
At first I didn’t like that there was no pictures but as I looked through the book it really does explain things well and the illustrations are well done.Another person complained that the book is old, but so are the embroidery stitches. Sometimes old is actually much better than new. It does not matter in this case, as the stitches are still the same.Update 08/25/18I actually really like this book. It sat on my shelf as I was not doing any embroidery. But when I started I reached for this book and I am so glad I have it. It’s a lovely well written book. Don’t be put off by the lack of pictures. The drawings are well done. I’m very happy with this book.

An essential stitch resource for all levels of experience.
Every stitch I've ever heard of, and a few I haven't, is in this book! Each is clearly illustrated in black and white, and many variations are shown. The book is logically divided into type of stitches, such as: Straight, Knotted, Woven, Chain, and more. This would be a great addition to any needle worker's library, from beginner to experienced. After looking through it, I am eager to start a project.I would recommend this book to everyone.

Comprehensive collection of stitches as well as other good information
After looking through many library books to find a good refresher as I resume crewelwork, this book jumped out at me. Perfect for anyone who is either beginning a needlework hobby or resuming one. I think every possible stitch is covered, as well as discussing the back side as well. Some general information was provided on needles, materials, finishing and framing in the first section. I am glad I found this.

Good condition. I have been flipping through this book ...
Wow this book came a day earlier than expected! Good condition. I have been flipping through this book a bit and even though I haven't started embroidery yet, I can see the instructions are very clear and they even show what the stitch looks like on the reverse side of the fabric. VERY helpful. I would say that if you are starting embroidery you should invest in this book!

Really good stitch dictionary
I really like this book. It is a good guide to over 200 stitches and gives not only the diagrammatic instructions on how to form the stitch, but its uses and helpful tips as well. What I particularly like Is that the stitches are shown by group eg chain stitches, composite stitches, woven stitches. In addition the author, Marion Nichols, also gives an suggested layout for a stitch sampler for each group.

A good guide
This book is a little dated in style but has clear instructions and pictures as to how to do around 150 stitches. It show you what the front and back will look like, suggests uses for each stitch and a rhythm for the stitch itself. It is grouped into families of stitches - eg chain stitch family, knot family, straight stitch family, blanket stitch family so it is easy to see how the stitches develop. I am a beginner at embroidery and this has developed my technique but there would be something in here for embroiderers at all levels.

A good go-to reference for embroidery stitches.
A really well laid-out book. Stitches are introduced in 'families' so a really good book for beginners and experts alike. The stitches in each chapter could form the basis of a reference sampler.

This book is so easy to understand and gives a lot of different stitches ...
My embroidery stitch bible. This book is so easy to understand and gives a lot of different stitches for absolute beginners up as you progress. I would hate to be without it. It is my best buy.
