Original Yashraj Films CD

One of the finest song-writers
This was Rabbi's second music cd - the first one was from around 2005. Rabbi Shergill declined to follow the Indian way to musical success - through Bollywood, trying instead to be a music icon in the Western mould. His first disc 'Rabbi' contained some of the finest songs ever written. He allowed the use of 'Tere Bin' in a Bollywood movie (Delhi Heights) on condition that he would be portrayed singing it in the movie. Superficially about romantic love it has equal elements hinting at higher love, Tere Bin is the best of that disc which has other superb songs like Ajj Nachna, Gill Te Guitar (about boyhood friends lost in the 'brain-drain'), Jugni (a commentary on Indian problems), and Totia Manmotia (a metaphor for existential angst) - songs that Amitabh Bachchan once declared he listened to every day. Avengi ja Naa contains work of similar quality, with its top song being 'Challa' which may be the greatest interpretation of this old Punjabi folk song. V. S. Naipaul once said he didn't understand these (Punjabi) songs, but could not fail to remark their depth and feeling. This is great music from a unique musician - rarely does one encounter this quality.
