Zorro Unmasked at Last
Anyone who knows me more than acknowledges my opinion of "The Mask of Zorro" -- as a great swashbuckler that Errol Flynn would be more than proud of. I long-awaited the Collector's Edition and was thrilled when it was finally released -- two disks jam-packed full of goodies. Formerly only released in the UK, USA citizens will at last be able to view all the deleted scenes, trailers, documentaries, interviews, featurettes, music videos, production information, widescreen and full screen formats, commentaries, advertising materials, publicity galleries, and costume information that make up one of the most smashing summer hits of the nineties. I preordered my copy with Amazon and was very pleased with the result. The first disc includes most of the "goodies," and the second has only the standard screen adaptation and commentary. I'll give you the let-down, but won't spoil anything since I know any true fan will want this masterpiece of packaging.Deleted Scenes -- There are apparently only two finished deleted scenes, although there appears to be another one imbedded into the "Zorro Unmasked" feature. One is "The Thief," and took place directly after Alejandro first saw Tornado in the square. He lifts a wallet off a Spanish Don and Diego calls him a thief. The second is the alternate ending, which originally took place directly after Diego's death, in which Alejandro and Elena (with the peasants) meet Santa Anna on his way to the mine. I won't give you any clues as to what happens, but Elena and Alejandro kiss as the film fades out.The third, unfinished and embedded into the featurette, is apparently a competition between Elena and Captain Love. They are showing off their swordsmanship and fencing skills in sort of a medieval joust. I wish they'd completed this scene and left it in, since I love the ending line by Elena to her father. The scenes are widescreen and unfinished, meaning the quality is not half as good as it would be in a completed film. Still, they are great fun!Theatrical Trailers -- There are two, one on the original disk and the second, a longer "preview" no doubt shown in theaters. Additionally there are 15-30 second TV spots, about a dozen in all, which each focus on a different element... "He will go from ZERO to Zorro!" "This summer, their fates will collide!" etc. Initially, they're a lot of fun."Zorro Unmasked" Documentary -- Excellent featurette, about an hour in length, with in-depth interviews, behind-the-scenes information, and moviemaking tips. We meet the sword master, the director, producer, costume designer, and many more of the people who worked in, around, and on screen, including the three stars.Music Video -- Very nicely done, the music video features cuts from the film to the performers and to a little romance of its own being carried on by a bandito and his senorita, who eventually get together in the end.The rest is excellent... the director does a beautiful job on his commentary, the production and costume information are very informative, and the publicity galleries are great. They have an excellent into-screen to the menu. All in all, it's worth the twenty bucks... and more.

One of the Best!
This version of Zorro easily surpasses earlier editions including the one with Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell. Anthony Hopkins portrays the older Zorro fighting injustice. His wife is killed, his home burned, his daughter captured by Don Raphael Montero, and he is imprisoned. The Montero returns, Hopkins wins his freedom, earlier Antony Banderas as a youth and his brother watch Zorro in action. Banderas brother is killed by a cavalry officer patterned after Custer who along with the Montero wants an independent California, and with mined gold wants to bribe General Santa Anna and set up an independent republic. Banderas is trained by Hopkins as a younger version of Zorro. Ghastly scene as Banderas confronts Matt Letscher who shows him his brother's head and hand in a jar of alcohol. A young Catherine Zeta Jones plays the love interest, she is actually Hopkin's daughter. Great action scenes filled with excellent sword fighting as Banderas is caught in the hacienda. Loved the dancing and great costumes as Banderas is invited to alcade's hacienda with Hopkins as his valet. Great climax as Banderas and Hopkins go to the gold mine to confront the enemy along with Catherine Zeta Jones. Behind the scenes extras are excellent. Banderas also does an excellent job as Shrek's sidekick. Great fun and exciting adventure, this is the best, the sequel not as good.

“Children should never have to see the things we do.” Governor Mendoza]
“Children should never have to see the things we do.” Governor Mendoza]This 1998 adventure comedy tells the tale of Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) who escapes from his prison of 20 years to reclaim his daughter Eléna (Catherine Zeta Jones), who was taken from him as a baby, by Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), the governor of the region, to be brought up in Spain. Now aged, Zorro trains a vagabond Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) to take on his mantle and win back his daughter who has no knowledge of him and thwart Montero’ evil schemes. From the outset this swashbuckler adventure dazzles with it’s large scale setting and action sequences. A simple tale of Good vs Evil with over the top heroics and stunning stunts. The beautiful cinematography creates an heroic atmosphere and all tinged with a wry, dry humour and romance. The disc offers languages and audio set up [English 5.1 or German 5.1], subtitles [15 languages, mainly European but also Hebrew and Hindi], scene selections, extra features [directors commentary, making of, deleted scene, us trailer] and play. The action is fast paced, the music lively and jolly like the script and the cast is perfect. There is definite chemistry between the three leads who all turn in very credible performances as do the supports. What’s not to like? This is a PG and the only offence is the slapstick ‘adventure’ style violence, there’s no swearing, no nudity and no sex. Fantastic family fun, and plenty of laughs, provided you let yourself enter into the spirit of it all.

Brilliant Blu-ray transfer of terrific movie.
Fabulous picture and at times really quite stunning. This Blu-ray is utterly immaculate and looks like it was shot yesterday - albeit on film and not digital. Although this was a German release, don't be put off as the disc menu is in English and the default settings are English without subtitles so just put it in your machine and play. The film itself is as fresh as the day it was made and hasn't dated at all. It is, of course, utterly daft but it's basically an updated Saturday matinee big kids' swashbuckler so you shouldn't be expecting a documentary. Buy it and enjoy!

Languages & Verdict
Blu-ray all zoneRatio of the feature film:2.35:1Languages of the feature film:DTS Master Audio 5.1: English, Italian, Castilian SpanishDolby 2.0: Commentary by Martin CampbellSubtitles for all the videos:English, Italian, Castilian SpanishExtra subtitles only available for the feature film:Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish and English for Hard of HearingVerdict:Very good picture and sound for this master-piece which has not aged at all.As usual, a very good picture means details we are not meant to see:- At Diego's house, the sword fight in the wide staircases, we can see the 2 stuntmen standing for Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Wilson.- Even there is not much action in the dance scene between Elena and Alejandro, another double stand for Mr. Banderas.- The first fight between Zorro and Captain Love, Montero, Zorro runs in the map of California and cuts it down, over all of the men. You can clearly see that strings are pulling it over the men.- At the end of the film, at the mine, Alejandro grabs a shovel and slides down the hill. If you look at the shovel, you will see the strap that holds his feet to it.And much more of course.A true pleasure to watch this film again in such fantastic conditions.NB: Antonio Banderas does not dub himself for the Castilian Spanish soundtrack unfortunately, as according to Mr. Banderas dubbing is not as good as acting. Therefore, that was Salvador Aldeguer who dubbed Antonio Banderas.Curiously, Mr. Banderas dubbed himself for Shrek 2, 3 and Puss in Boots

Zorro in Blu
Now a regular fixture on Saturday afternoon TV, this undervalued movie really comes alive on Blu-Ray. Looking effortlessly fantastic 99.999% of the time (except for one out-of-focus shot during the Hopkins/Zeta Jones dialogue scene in the stables - not the fault of the blu-ray), the transfer is crisp, clean and full of detail. The audio matches the visuals with great clarity and impact - particularly during the climatic shots of the gold mine exploding. The cast also seem to be enjoying themselves while never coming across as smug - and so they should: how many big-budget swashbucklers are made these days that don't feature Johnny Depp? It's a great 'they-don't-make-'em-like-this-anymore' movie. Which proves that Hollywood can produce a satisfyingly entertaining family movie when it puts its' mind to it. Unfortunately, the magic formula wasn't to be repeated for the dull sequel (The Legend of Zorro), but don't let that put you off this far classier original. A great blu-ray at a bargain price.

The epitome of Zorro!
Thoroughly enjoyed this film. Antonio Banderas is wonderful as Zorro. The story has depth and I wish they would make more films like this. Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and the cast are of the highest calibre!I am so glad I own this film and its sequel The Legend of Zorro. I should also mention that the music is so fitting and captures the Mexican culture. Also the costumes are so well designed.Martin Campbell, the director, did a splendid job with both this film and the sequel. Had Anthony Hopkins not played the older, more seasoned Don Diego, I could also see Timothy Dalton playing the role. And I would be remiss in not applauding the breathtaking cinematography. One really feels transported back to a time in old Mexico 🇲🇽I recommend this film wholeheartedly!
