This mattress makes our den functional as a true TV watching room
We had a futon mattress before but it was straight cotton and after a 2 hour movie you butt-ski was tired-ski. When you sit on this, initially the give and cushion is felt and appreciated. I have to admit that there have been several times that stretched out and woke up a length of the movie later. It can get a little hard after 3 hours or so, but I am a big man, so take that into considerationThe finish on the cover is rich and elegant.Coming right out of the packaging, it fluffed up in just a few hours.

I was skeptical, but I wasn't disappointed.
Oh my goodness! I was really skeptical about buying a new futon mattress. We had a really good quality American-made one, but it was made to be extra thick (which we thought would mean softer and you don't feel the bars), but it ended up feeling like a rock. Which is fine if your butt wouldn't go numb every 30 minutes.I expected this one to come in a huge box and be incredibly heavy, based on reviews. I don't think it was 70 pounds. Maybe I'm wrong. It came in this tiny box - you'll be amazed at how well they package it - and I could carry it up my stairs (and I'm not super strong).I thought the smell would be overpowering, like this particle/pressed board desk I once got (the kind that takes 2 days just to put together, and the paint starts wearing off in the first year). The smell really wasn't that bad. Yes, there is a smell - it's been tightly wrapped in plastic straight out of the factory. But it's not like I could smell it in the next room. I could still smell it faintly while sitting on it. I'll take the tiny smell for how comfy this thing is! <<UPDATE>> I just changed this to 4 stars because after more than a week, it still smells like chemicals. I can only smell it if I'm sitting on it (not from across the room or anything), but the smell really should have worn off by now. Also, some threads are coming off where the seams are, but the seams don't seem to be unraveling at all - probably some extra threads were caught in the seams when they were sewn up.The instructions that came in the box say to give it 24-48 hours to expand, but I'm pretty sure ours was fully expanded in less than 12. (Maybe even 4.) It's like those capsules you drop in water and watch grow into animals...or something. Quite a show!Anyways, I've sat and slept on at least 5 different futon mattresses. The best I had before this was regular foam with cotton around it, and I could still feel the boards of the futon underneath (and the mattress got really lumpy). I almost tried a spring mattress this time, because I just wanted something softer than the rock I'd been sitting on...but I knew it wouldn't take long before you felt every spring, and a lot of people said the springs will split if you keep it in the couch position (which I usually do). I'm SO glad I chipped in the extra $30-$100 for puppy. This is BY FAR the most comfy futon mattress I've experienced in my life. When you sit on it, you can feel yourself sinking into the memory foam a little. And then...it stops. So it's not like the couch you sit on that you can't get out of, but it's soft enough that my tailbone isn't in extreme pain after 2 minutes. The one bad review that said it was rock hard: I bet you they didn't follow the instructions and wait for it to expand. No, it's not as cushy as a couch that has springs under the foam cushions, but that's just not possible with a futon or else you'll end up feeling the boards/bars underneath.Oh, and unlike the spring ones I almost purchased, I had absolutely no trouble folding this into the couch position. Maybe I folded it after only letting it expand about an hour, so it easily stayed in that position? It actually stays in the L shape better than my previous futon mattresses did. This is definitely worth the purchase, especially if you plan to keep your futon for life. We wanted to purchase a couch but feared we couldn't get it up our crazy windy stairs, so I decided to put the money into a new mattress instead. I wouldn't hesitate to keep this, even in our family room. The beauty of futons is that if you get them dirty, you can always cover them and keep washing the cover...can't do that with most couches. If you get one that's a keeper, it will last you a lifetime (and can always be put in a spare room for when company comes - always more comfy than a pull-out sofa!).Thank you to all the other reviewers out there! You're the reason I purchased this one.

Super comfy, smells of paint when new, turns UPS drivers into Hercules
This mattress has been quite an experience.First, some backstory. About two months ago, I moved into a third-floor apartment in a building with no elevator. The only path to my apartment door is to go up two flights of relatively narrow stairs with many support beams and guide rails along the way, not to mention the suspended light fixtures in the outside corridors. It's not conducive to moving cumbersome and heavy things. So, things went down like this:- Buy $100 metal frame futon from wal-mart, feel thrifty and surprisingly comfortable.- Notice a slight indention in the mattress when I get up the next morning.- A week later, become rage incarnate due to poor sleep, as the filling in the mattress has decided to migrate to my sides and allow me to fully appreciate the shape and firmness of the support bars underneath the mattress. After doing quite a bit of research, I settled on this thickness mattress because all of the 6-inch mattresses had a number of reviews that complained about still feeling the support bars. I wasn't about to buy anything that reintroduced those bastards back into my life, so I started looking for 8-inch mattresses. Lo and behold, this mattress is both very well-reviewed AND is eligible for Prime shipping and free returns! Super dope. Budget ruined, task accomplished. For the next couple days, I kinda snickered at the thought of my apartment complex office staff trying to manipulate this 70lb mystery box that was en route. Little did I know that I am apparently on the delivery route of a UPS driver that moonlights as a bodybuilder, because this 70lb box with outside dimensions roughly the size of a computer desk was sitting right outside my door when I got home, free of dragging marks or any signs of struggle. That guy just straight carried it up some of the most treacherous stairs I've ever encountered, and must have done so completely blind to what was in front of him.Surprised to find it had arrived two days before it was expected to even ship, I was excited to unpack it. MAN, DID THEY PACK THIS. Not one, not two, but THREE thick plastic straps band these things down inside the box (I was very glad to have a fixed blade handy), and there's loads of plastic wrap in the mix as well. This is all to seal in the fresh and enticing aroma of wet paint that immediately filled the apartment once I got the wrap off.I quickly found the mattress fits perfectly on my old frame, and that my old mattress fits perfectly in the dumpster.Given that I clearly had no plans on sleeping on my old torture device, I did two things I was very glad to have done:- set up a large fan next to the mattress so that it would speed up the airing-out and decompression process.- bought a bottle of extra strength febreeze. The fan plumped the bed up very quickly - I had it set up for about 4 hours before I was to sleep on it, and the combination of a nice, plump, comfy bed and febreeze-enriched paint fumes sent me to a restful and wonderful night's sleep. It is now night three, and the mattress continues to be both comfortable, plump, and vaguely smells of paint. I imagine the smell will dissipate over time, and the other reviews give me quite a bit of confidence regarding the longevity of this mattress. If you or someone you know is doing that particular trick where it looks like you're sleeping on a mattress but you're actually in a mutually hateful relationship with metal supports, then buy this bed right now. I don't care if you can't afford it. I couldn't afford it. I've eaten eggs and expired bread for three days now. Totally worth it. Besides, the paint fumes will make you forget all your money troubles.

weird color but it's comfy
Mattress is comfortable which was my goal. I did order the hunter green and was disappointed to see it's not exactly the green advertised. Other than that, everything is good and I would sleep on it.
