A Superb Addition to the Arsenal

Fantastic book for lovers of typewriters
Very good book for typewriter lovers and and those who want to get away from modern digital world from time to time. The print version of this book is way better than the kindle book so I recommend the physical version. I carry this book wherever I go.

Wonderful...
Imagine a world where people were more conscious of being in or out of the data stream? Teaching our children the value of life outside of the data stream and helping them understanding what life would be like if there were no satellites or power is a indelible lesson. The typewriter would again reign in any post-apocalyptic era. For today, it's a wonderfully visceral experience stamping your words into a page and enjoying the tactile satisfaction of producing something tangible and well-thought out. I start all first drafts of anything of importance on a typewriter, you're forced to really think about what you're going to say and get to the heart of the matter. Natural compression and poignant thoughts present themselves at attention each and every time. My 1956 ROYAL Quiet Deluxe, "Hemingway", is like an old friend and companion who's always ready to sit down and experience a good story. The author of this book nails it. Wonderful printing and the typewriter ribbon cloth bookmark is a lovely touch to a brilliant book. Five Stars.

My new favorite book
I'll get to the point right away: this is a brilliant, engaging, light-hearted book about a newly-found passion of mine. The author, Richard Polt, makes his love of typewriters shine through. I have read the (few) negative reviews and, while everyone has the right to their opinion, I just don't get it. The book is well-researched, well-written, and very professionally designed and laid out. It's packed with information about the history, the evolution, the past, the future, the repair of, and the care of typewriters. I bought this book just as I was searching for my first typewriter. I consumed the book quickly and have references it multiple times already. I now own three typewriters and am concerned about how easy it is to want more! I love this book. It is one of my favorites. Furthermore, the author is incredibly genuine and gracious, responding to my questions and messages with humor and encouragement. Buy and enjoy this book!

Five Star Book!
If you have any interest whatsoever in manual typewriters then this book is must have. The author takes you on a fun journey through the history of typewriters and explains everything you need to know to join people around the world who have declared their love for this old-fashioned technology. The Typewriter Revolution is richly illustrated with informative descriptions of different brands and models along with helpful shopping tips and advice on keeping your typewriter in good working condition. Polt’s words flow on the pages and it is hard to put this book down. Even though it is over 375 pages I found myself wanting to read it in one sitting. Who would have thought a book about typewriters would be a real page turner. Not only does Polt provide interesting descriptions of typewriters, he also identifies famous people who used a particular brand and model. For example, did you know Ernest Hemingway used a Royal portable and that George Orwell preferred a Remington semi-portable? I learned that my favorite science fiction writer, Issac Asimov, used an IBM Selectric and that in all likelihood a note he sent me back in 1977 was typed on a Selectric (see photo). This is all fun stuff. In closing, I suggest you use Amzon’s “Look inside” feature and scroll through the pages. When you are done I believe you will buy the book.

Must by for any enthusiast!
For me using typewriter is NOT because of digital detox or anything of a fashion, because I don't own pc and not mobile phone. I use typewiters if I need types document and also letters(but I mainly write letters with my handwriting). Still, it is VERY informative book, encouraging book and I hope and know for sure others will love to read it. It is well written and with a lot of info. I have 8 typewriters(all manual) sand some in that book like my 50's Remington standard. Anyway -a must by for any enthusiast!

Essential Reading for Typewriter Lovers!
Rarely do you come across a volume whose physical attributes match its subject matter for both style and interest - but this is one such volume. Its weight, quality, typeface, illustrations, semi-flexible hardback, even the delightful red-and-black-ribbon bookmark ooze top-notch attention to detail. Then the subject matter itself is fascinating materials superbly presented! If you are a complete beginner seeking to choose your first machine, or someone seeking to repair or clean a typewriter in order to restore it to use, if you want to know more about the history of the machine's development, or to discover something of the global renaissance in typing as an act of defiance in the digital age - well then this book is for you! More importantly, if you didn't come to the book thinking you wanted to know about the use of typewriters in street poetry etc... somehow Richard Polt's engaging prose will soon have you interested and wanting to know more! One warning though - I bought this book owning one typewriter... I already now have five... use them all... and browsing ebay or car-boot sales will never be the same again! Hold on, is that an early Smith-Corona over there? Must dash! :)

excellent book, the author is American so obviously has a USA bias, but certainly no worse for that.. It is excellent for browsing. I enjoy picking it up and reading sections at random. I have a small collection of 12 machines and it is good to read about fellow enthusiasts. The book is well bound and printing and photographs are to a high standard. All in all, a worthwhile buy. Thank you.

Nostalgic!
Having trained as a secretary in the 70's on a manual office typewriter, I purchased this for nostalgic reasons rather than because I thought it would be 'hip' but apparently it is! Have been 'dipping in' and out of it since purchased and have enjoyed reading it. It has now inspired me to hunt down a vintage portable and get typing!
