Asafoetida powder is a strong concentrated spice used to flavor curries and lentils. Hing is also known to greatly improve digestion. Asafoetida is an oleogum resin obtained from the living rhizomes and roots of Ferula assa-foetida, a branching perennial relative of fennel. In its most pure form (tears) it is a solid or semi-solid mass, with an intense, pungent, alliaceous odor, and bitter, acid taste. When used in minute quantities it enhances and blends the flavors of other spices, and imparts a delicate, onion-like flavor.

Not gluten-free
Couldn’t use this because it is not gluten-free. Found another brand that was. Gave this one to my neighbor who can eat gluten.

it doesn't smell as bad as I expected
I have only used this once, and because of the description I did not use enough to really taste any onion or garlic flavor. The descriptions of this I read on the internet described it as really disgusting smelling. I've smelled things that are a lot worse than this. Maybe this particular brand is weak, I can't say. It is sitting on the kitchen counter in its original container and I can't smell it. I'll give it another try the next time I cook an Indian dish and will update this if there is any change

Delicious!
I'm not crazy about the container the spice is in, but the spice itself is excellent. I would prefer that it come in a jar, but since it is difficult to find, I was very happy to get any at all.

Overall happy
Very pungent and definitely gives a distinctive taste to food. I have to keep the container in two bags, because the smell is completely overpowering.

Mild Aroma with Hing
Lower priced brand of hing powder, mixed with some kind of flour, available in local stores. The product is not strong like the other brands, but for light flavoring, this brand is alright. It is not organic or the highest quality. The packaging is poor, hard to open without spilling, and the re-closing is not tight and will lose the aroma. The contents need to be transferred to an airtight jar to preserve the flavor. For strong flavor, add more hing to taste and flavor.Hing powder should be added at the end of preparation and not allowed to boil. Once boiled, the dish will have almost no flavor of hing.
