For better details and proper explanations you will have to look ...
Fairly basic book on salt printing for the beginner. For better details and proper explanations you will have to look to other books. It does give the basic steps to salt printing and process and is good for anyone just getting into these type processes. Nicely designed book with good graphic layout albeit short and lacking advanced techniques. The book does show good examples of the same image toned and untoned which is really nice to see. I would say the author should have spent more time on the process before putting out this book. It is clear he has not worked extensively with salt printing but did go through the process on a basic level and shows how to complete the basic process quite well.

A bit sloppy
Although it contains a lot of useful information, this book could have benefited from some disciplined editing. For example, at times when I thought the treatment of paper was being discussed, we were suddenly dealing with glass plates. And the procedure described by the author for the preparation of potassium citrate from citric acid and sodium carbonate is noteworthy. Anyone who presumes to instruct people in the handling of chemicals ought to at least try to get it right, and obviously not the feeblest of efforts was made in this case. If Mr. Mrhar can actually change sodium to potassium, perhaps he could instruct us in the transmutation of silver to gold.

Good starter book for beginners
A little book, but it goes into a fair amount of detail for what you do get. Good amount of history, step by step examples of many processes with examples given of what you need to do (and need to do it with) and what your results should be. Mentions glass/film negatives but focuses on using digital negatives. Better for learning how to prepare glass or paper for printing than anything else (except that history). Not a "go it alone with this book" source of information- you'll need to go elsewhere for detailed information.

Empfehlenswert

Salt Print but non only - a must for alternative photography entusiasts, beginners and experts
This is a precious book for the absolute beginner, with all the description of materials, recipes, procedures arranged as foolproof step to step instructions! and everything explained with neat pictures (see example). At the same time it contains very specialized informations for the expert, well beyond the simple Salt print on paper, with the variations on albumenized/arrowroot and matte paper, but also with rare instructions how to print on glass, prepare Opalotypes and Orotones.Very extensive are the paragraphs on toning, which really allows to the prhotographer to give it's personal tone to the final print!Very important is the comprehensive paragraph on the realization of the digital negative, explained for the processes described in the book, with the possiblity to download the appropriate correction curves and scripts from the author's webpage. Mrhar presents a specialized and extensive treaty on the digital negatives in a separate book : "Easy Digital Negatives".The book is completed with instructions how to finish the salt print with recipes for different varnishes and a very interesting reference section with citation of all the old books where he found the formulas to test and adapt to the today's available materials/substances.A very recommended book for the lovers of the antique techniques!
