If you just want check the finger board was straight or not, or check the levelness of the fret wires, you needn’t take down or release the strings, but if you find the neck was not enough straight and want adjustment, please release the string at first, then adjust the screw in the guitar body.

Edges are not flat
The good: It is reasonably thick and sturdy with a nice gold anodized finish.The bad: The edges are not flat - not even close. I checked it on my granite countertops and against glass at several locations. I could easily get a .010 feeler under the center. It was stamped out of a piece of aluminum with no attempt to machine the edges. They were actually concave. It is a shame really. It would have been very easy to grind the edges flat and it would be a good tool. As is, it is not only useless, but you could cause a lot of damage if you count on this tool when filing or grinding things. I am returning it.

It Works
This works fine for the money. It's not a precision tool. It seems like it was stamped out and then coated with a finish that's a little thick considering what the tool is to be used for. The dual scale is nice. This works well on both 24 3/4 (Gibson) and 25 1/2 (Fender Strat and Tele) but because of that the notching is a little odd. I'd buy it again for the money. Works well for working on my own stuff. I don't think I'd recommend this to a pro.

Worth every penny!
Excellent precision! Measured against glass and laser, perfectly straight. Worked great on my Les Paul, G&L Legacy, and Ibanez guitars. The finish is a plus as well.

Notched straight edge for guitar necks
The elongated notches allow for checking the fretboard straightness for just about any scale length.I was very pleased with the accuracy, price and speed of delivery.
