Morton & Bassett Chinese Five Spice, 1.9 oz – Non-GMO, Salt-Free, Authentic Blend for Stir-Fries, Marinades & Asian-Inspired Dishes

I have been in search for this particular blend for a long time.My family used to have a Chinese mom & pop grocery store that specialized in Roasted Barbecue Pork, Roast Ducks, Roast Pig,... People came from three states away to buy our fresh vegetables & roasted goods every weekend. We cooked as many as 4 whole roasted pigs per weekend. Now, many people call roast pig, ‘Pork Belly’ ( I guess because it’s not a whole pig). Things change with every generation. As with most small family businesses, the next generations benefit from higher education and better job opportunities. So, we closed after three generations and 70+ years.Our family still cooks at our homes but true ingredients are harder to find. This blend is the same balance of color, smell, texture, & taste, that I remember selling and using in our recipes.Over the last few years, I have thrown away many ‘five spice’ powders (even the ones purchased in Asian supermarkets) that were too pungent or just a little off. Not bad products, but not quite the right blend. I did take a star off for versatility because a specialty spices are not intended for everything.Larger size bottles would be nice.

04/16/2022It's not the flavor's fault,I need to get used to this flavor.Flavor profile : heavy on the cinnamon.This is a spice with an acquired taste. I cook and use ratios all the time. I used 1 tablespoon for 3 lbs of chicken thigh and the flavor was extremely overpowering. I would use 1/2 tablespoon or less next time as it was very strong for me. I had to use the crutch of soy sauce to bring the flavor down.Until next time, will try to keep this review uptodate.Thank you for reading so far.

Good Stuff

I've tried a lot of 5 spice mixes, and this is my favorite of them all. It's a very rich flavor, is always fresh and makes my recipes taste great!

Always have it on hand. Good spice blend for stir fry

I like that there is no black, or white pepper in this mix. I've had to eliminate pepper from my diet, and this was perfect! It has fantastic flavor.

Great addition for our egg rolls! Taste has gone up a notch because of adding the 5 Spice.

More sweet than spicy
