South Korean Master Hong Sangsoo s 21st feature as director, The Day After, is a mordantly comic tale of infidelity and mistaken identity. Book publisher Bongwan s (Kwon Haehyo) marriage is on the rocks after his wife (Cho Yunhee) discovers the affair he s been having with his assistant (Kim Saebyuk). Now that relationship is ending too and Bongwan s new assistant, the sharp and sensitive Areum (Kim Minhee), on her first day in the office, is left to navigate the fallout of all the turnover in Bongwan s life. With its ingeniously destabilizing leaps through time and stark black and white cinematography, The Day After begins as a darkly hilarious story of a man embroiled in extramarital entanglements but soon shifts in a way only Hong can manage into a heartfelt portrayal of a young woman on a quest for spiritual fulfillment. Special Features * Q&A with Hong Sangsoo provided by Film Society of Lincoln Center * Theatrical Trailers * Booklet featuring an essay by Dennis Lim * Alternate cover art

And Then, and then, and then...
Brilliant work of a genius. Would like to read "And Then" by Natsume Soseki that the publisher/literary critic guy hands over to A-rheum at the end of the movie. So much to take out of the movie, yet I don't have enough skills/ability to expound on all the things that this movie is offering. Serious contemplation and struggles to grasp philosophical questions about the essence, words, faith and so on are contrastingly materialized with such absurdity in our actions in our real lives. Life so sad and serious yet so ridiculous but we keep desperately trying to find a meaning or sense out of which there may not be or we are just too weak and lazy to create one and hold on to it. There are so many layers of "and then's" only to show twists and contradictions of their previous convictions in the story. In that regard, as A-reum stated in the movie, we may not be the true owner/master/protagonist of our life as we don't even understand what the heck we are doing in this world let alone control or own it. The movie is sad, funny, and so real at the same time. The scenes are beautiful without overstatement and provide warmth while the message may be cynical. Superb cinematography!

This isn't art house
- Distracting camera work- Aping prior genre styles without updating or improving upon them- Filtering youthful philosophizing through the mouths of people old enough to already know better- Improbable exchanges that could have been much more interesting had they gone somewhere other than the straight path to which they went (particularly when they meet again at the end... The fact he didn't remember her after such a dramatic day was honestly stupefying.)- There are just so many better movies out there that deserve your time than this only semi-coherent, A.D.D filmed, derivative, slice-of-life mess.-

Love it.
This is engaging because it's nothing but their own story (director & actress). Now he brought God into the relationship, which is smart. However far we run from Him, we can't avoid. Because He is in us (not necessarily in the system). As a writer living in NYC and someone who missed living in Paris, I found Sangsoo Hong once again refreshing. Yes we are getting old now (including our beloved Kim although she's beautiful than ever) and it's a bliss. - New York, 3/19/2019

Hong Sangsoo--the Korean John Cassavetes
Like Cassavetes, director Hong Sangsoo (who also wrote the script) structures scenes to find the motional truth of the characters. The acting is brilliantly naturalistic and achieves an incredible authenticity in every scene. The structure is that of a jigsaw puzzle, without a linear narrative. That had to be intentional, for the viewers (if they're paying attention) are asked to fill in the blanks. A daring and groundbreaking film in Korean cinema.

great movie
takes a while to get going - but a simple, funny movie about a man cheating on his wife, lies, and some hilarious things that come out of that situation.

Thoroughly engaging and clever.
Exceptionally well made for a black & white arthouse style movie and with some big-name actors to boot! It definitely explores some funny concepts, but it shouldn't be classified as a comedy imo.

Not entertaining and very slow paced
I had to give up on this movie, I watched the 1st half and I was very bored. It has a very slow pace to it and mainly a slice-of-life with a plot regard a married guy loving some other chick. He and his lover are rather odd characters in an unfunny way.
