This is not just a length of cord. It comes with a socket for a bulb, the cord, a switch, and the male connector end that you plug into the wall. This is not a completely an old-school style electrical cord for you hipsters. The casing around the socket does look pretty retro. The outside of the cord is plastic. I consider old timey cords to be ones wrapped in thread or fabric. If you are looking for a cord with an outer plastic coating then this might be the one for you. The protruding spinwheel style switch is near the male end of the cord, the end that plugs into the wall. There is a fastener that goes around the outside of the light socket. It does not appear to be extremely substantial. If you need it to bear the weight of a hefty shade you may need to use something other means of fastener. The unit arrived in a reasonable amount of time with sufficient packaging.

So far works great for what I needed..can also make your own shade to fit.

FEB 2016Package says they are UL listed; made in China. I have been buying a lot of lighting products lately and these are heavier gauge and seem more robustly built than about 50% of the stuff I have purchased. As shown in the photo, the cord has silver wire inside of clear plastic, the socket and switch are white. What I could not tell from the photo is that instead of one collar, there are two screw on collars to hold shades securely.The outside diameter of the collars is about 58mm or approximately 2.25 inches.The hole/inside diameter of the collars is about 37mm.

There is no problem with the cord or socket. The problem is mine because the socket is too big for what I want it for, which is a lantern.I bought smaller sockets and had an electrician change them; they work fine now.

So far, I think this light kit works VERY well.On a related note, I wish I could find this type of cord in a longer length, but apparently they only make these pendant light cords with ring clamps up to 15'... At least, that is all I have found so far! :-/
