History and anatomy of the first tank of World War One
Great book covering the subject of the First World War invention of the original armored tank. Decent details from especially British view and great interior details photos from the existing models in the British War Museum. This is the only way most of us will ever see the interior of one of these historic fighting vehicles. However I wish some variations built by United States in WW 1 could have been detailed plus the use of hermaphrodite versions (Cannon/MG one side and 2x MG other side) by the Russian White army during the revolution. Some additional details like of various odd ball uses would have been great too. There was one used at the British proving grounds for weight proving out the original design of the World War Two Bailey Bridge by driving the Female (MGs only) WW1 tank onto the prototype bridge suspended only 3' up off ground and then driving an additional WW2 British light tank up onto the top treads of the Female tank to end up with stacked tanks looking like a mother monkey carrying her baby on her back.

Great book!
David Fletcher is probably the one person on the planet that can write this book with such authority. He does a very good job presenting what it would be like to operate this tank. There is a lot we don't know about these tanks but Mr. Fletcher is very honest on this and bases everything on what facts are available. Great book not only for someone interested in these early tanks but a must if you are working on a model.

Excellent Book
This book is an excellent look at the development of the first tanks in World War One, with particular reference to a restored Mark IV tank owned by the Tank Museum in the United Kingdom. The book is filled with illustrations and large photos of the preserved Mark IV tank with associated descriptions about its development, motive power, armour, armament and what it was like to drive and work in such a vehicle.Highly recommended.

Loved this book
Loved this book, so much detail and historical information. The abundance of schematics makes this even better, considering i had originally bought this as reference for making a scale model. looking forward to the book over the RR armored car coming out in march!

Good read for a tank enthusiast
Great book about the Grandfather of all tanks, the Mark IV. As usual with Haynes very detailed and throughout description of the tank and it‘s components. Recommendation for every tank enthusiast.Remark: the picture of the book cover differs from my book’s cover, namely as the book covers the Mark IV and not „ 1915 to 1945 (all models)“ as stated, do not get misleaded

A VERY Worthy Production - Highly Recommended
This is one of four Haynes manuals currently available that deal with tanks. The others look at the Churchill, Sherman and Tiger tanks of World War Two. This book focuses on the British Mark IV tank that was used extensively in World War One. The author, David Fletcher, is a world authority on the history of tanks and uses to great effect all the resources available to him thanks to his long association with the Tank Museum at Bovington, Dorset. Not least from the fact that they have a working Mark IV tank there, the interesting history of which is also described. This is an excellent book, well written and illustrated with a great many photographs both modern and historical. I wish I did have my own Mark IV to maintain (although I suspect it would be a full time job!) but since I haven't, Mr Fletcher gives a wealth of detail about the mechanics of the tank, without becoming so technical that it might bore. I now know a great deal more about the workings of the main drive, the tracks and the structure of the tank as a whole. What it gave me most was a very clear insight as to what it might have been like to be inside one of these things while it was actually working. It's impossible to imagine the feelings of someone heading into battle in such a machine but just to think of the effort involved in running the tank and then having to do all that under enemy fire gives some idea of the bravery and determination of these early crews. For those new to the study of Armoured Fighting Vehicles there is a good introduction explaining the genesis of tanks and their early development. The rest of the book is divided into sections: Anatomy of the Mark IV, Tank Armament, Camouflage and Markings, Operating the Mark IV, The Tank at War, Retirement and Survivors.I recommend all the Haynes tank manuals. The Great War Tank volume is very good for anyone coming to the subject for the first time or for those wishing to add to their store of reference materials. Having read the book, I would also recommend a visit to the Tank Museum where you can see the Mark IV and other tanks referred to.Other Haynes Tank Manuals Churchill Tank Manual: An insight into owning, operating and maintaining Britain's Churchill tank during and after World War II (Owners' Workshop Manual) Sherman Tank Manual: An Insight into the History, Development, Production, uses and ownership of the world's most iconic tank (Owners Workshop Manual) Tiger Tank Manual: Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger 1 Ausf.E (Sdkfz 181) (Owner's Workshop Manual)Churchill Tank Manual: An insight into owning, operating and maintaining Britain's Churchill tank during and after World War II (Owners' Workshop Manual)Sherman Tank Manual: An Insight into the History, Development, Production, uses and ownership of the world's most iconic tank (Owners Workshop Manual)Tiger Tank Manual: Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger 1 Ausf.E (Sdkfz 181) (Owner's Workshop Manual)
