Really Nice
Great sound and really nicely decorated. Makes a great ornament even if you're not going to use it that often. I have it standing next to my piano and it looks really nice, even in my period house. I read other reviews about the cactus spikes sticking out etc, and I've shaken it about quite a lot and haven't really had any issues with this to be honest. All seems to be holding together quite well. Very soothing sound and you can make it last a long time. I love it.

A whole lotta shaking, but beware the hard knocks.
This is an interesting percussion instrument, to be sure. It is described as making "authentic rain sounds", and I guess, in a sense, it does in its own dry way. As a connoisseur of torrential downpours on roofs heard through open windows though, I have to say it comes a distant second! Where it really works is when you are making it produce rhythmic shaker sounds, which was why I bought it to begin with. The size of the rainstick means that the sound has plenty of body, but means that you really are best using it in both hands, when it becomes a pretty good aerobic exercise once you really get a rhythm going! It is pretty subtle if used gently, so there is a good range of expression from it. It feels and sounds natural, and of course even a regular rhythm has a human touch that sampled sounds really won't match in a studio setting. If you really must make rain sounds, I've found a good technique for keeping the sussuration going is to hold the tube ahead of you using both hands and, while tilting the tube to one side or the other, slowly rotate it around its axis to get the beads inside moving all the time and reduce the clattery sound it makes if you just upend the tube and let the beads cascade through. Once the weight moves into one end you can simply tilt it the opposite way and carry on as before, with the beads making their way back to the other end. It's an "okay" sound, but gets old quite quickly after which you will want to get back to percussion.Meinl make a lot of interesting percussion instruments, and this rainstick is a nice substantial-feeling part of their range. The shipping of mine was rather fraught (the couriers are a bit of a shower, lol) and it is possible that the rainstick was rather roughly handled, since the spines that extend into the bamboo tube are, in a few cases, loose enough to start falling out (they are put into the tube from outside, so the surface of the bamboo is studded with the ends of the spines, feeling somewhat like slightly raised nail heads - but without the potential harm to your hands!).The fragility of the instrument in this sense is a bit of a drawback, so I feel I need to dock part of a star for build quality, but I'm only allowed whole stars (into every life a little rain must fall). I'd put it somewhere near 4.6-7 stars! Pretty good but give it a once-over now and then to see how it is holding up. When you aren't using it, it also doubles as an ethnic-looking decoration for the home, the studio, or the home studio!Meinl also included a percussion catalogue, which now has me gazing longingly at some beautiful djembe drums. Their designs for some of their instruments, this rainstick included, are a lot of fun and in some cases they are things of beauty.

Male malissimo
