The best method to make kefir.
I love this. Since the beginning stared to make kefir, it's easy.I stopped to make kefir because no time to pass it to the colander everyday. With this little basket I just have to change it to a clean jar and get the kefir . The flavor is very good.I recomend this product.

Saves a lot of time and effort and makes food kefir
These grains come dry and you have to "rehydrate" them by placing them in milk. I ferment for 24ish hours. The problem is they don't really rehydrate well in the cage so I had to go old school and let them float freely, a big hassle for me as I'm busy (Read:lazy), and don't have so much time to strain out my grains everyday. However, after a few days of free floating, they were rehydrated and making such delicious kefir that I added them back to the cage and they continue to make good kefir.TLDR: I had to take the kefir out of the cage to rehydrate them initially, a huge hassle, but the kefir tastes good after a few days.

Did not arrive dried.
I just re-read the description of this item. I was expecting the grains to be dried and ordered them to be sent to my sister's home in the US where I would pick them up in a few weeks. When I returned to my home and opened the package I discovered a cold pack was included! Now I don't know if these grains are dead or what! I didn't expect they needed refrigeration and no where in the description did it say that. They have a strange smell but I put them in milk yesterday and changed it today. Maybe after a few milk changes they will be OK but they sat in a very warm home, unopened, for weeks. Poor description as I was expecting dry grains. If they survive I will change my rating.Nov 9: I am now changing my rating to 3 stars. After over a week of milk changes (nearly a gallon of milk wasted) I now have working kefir. I added blueberries for a second ferment and my grand daughter and I are drinking good-tasting kefir this morning. I would give more stars except for the false advertising: grains not dry and no sponge (whatever that is) included. Warning: open your package immediately, do not assume they are dried. Those babies need feeding right away.

Didn't work for me
It's day six of rehydrating these grains and they still smell like soured milk. No yeasty smell, no smell of fermentation, and the only chunks was the skin that formed off the top of the milk. I used pasteurized, homoginized whole milk since I had it available, but didn't even get any clots of milk fat so I don't think any fermenting is happening at all. I brew my own kombucha and water kefir, so I am confident everything was done correctly. Disappointed but since others have had success with these grains I must have gotten an off batch. Will be trying live grains next.

Just a gimmick!
I make a lot of kefir. And -sad but true- these devices are just a gimmick. Traditionally kefir grains in milk were hung in a bag by the door so the grains would get jostled when a person (their shoulder) bumped the bag. Grains need this jostling because the actual kefir forms around them essentially blocking the grains from processing more milk. When you use this kind of device most of the milk can't be processed by the grains. You are essentially drinking milk that has been sitting out for a day but has a little kefir in it. It still has lactose in it- no good if you are lactose intolerant like me! These products are a waste of plastic and a waste of milk. Kefir grains have to be free. FREE THE KEFIR GRAINS!! (don't buy this)

You need to put them in small cup of milk to get them producing good results for a day
These things work well. You need to put them in small cup of milk to get them producing good results for a day. After they come back to life their ability to produce Kefir amplifies. BTW, the foam is supposed to stay in...you'll see what I mean.

Good, as Hoped, as Expected
Made 3 batches with the grains so far. Good quality. Delivery took a little long, but then again I am waiting days at a time to drink this stuff. I also use the grains to culture cheese.
