Q: Does the EF228 have bearings

I don't know if it uses a bearing in the blade pivot, but it is very easy to open and close. This is a big, heavy knife, that looks and feels like quality. A great knife at double the price.

Q: Description says this is only hardened to 55 hrc. is this correct and if so how is the edge retention compared to d2 knives at 59-61 hrc?

I am doubtful that this is true D2. It does not hold an edge well I can tell you regardless of whatever the blade steel is. I hope that helps.

Q: Does the EF228 have bearings

It does have steel bearings. Nested liners as well so it has a thin overall profile in the handle. The blade is thick and substantial and a great shape. Nice knife overall. The liner that locks the blade sits a little proud of the scales and might cause a little discomfort with prolonged use. That would be one of the few areas of the knife I could point to that could use some improvement.
