When the user is bed ridden, or unable to move much because they are stuck in a prone position, their skin is in danger of pressure bruises and lesions. The quiet air pump and pad of this set provide a premium, medical grade alternating pressure treatment designed to allow the body's own circulatory system to work more efficiently. My father, under VA and hospice care, received an egg-shell foam pad to help prevent this type of bruising and bedsores. That pad was not completely successful. While better than nothing, the foam still became compressed in spots as he lay unmoving. Consequently, his skin still became damaged, and according to him, the egg-shell foam was not very comfortable to lay on. This pump and mattress come with instructions that are easy to follow and I had no problem getting it set up. I like that the instructions are printed on the unit which helps seniors who may not have a great memory.It should fit well on any size bed. On my queen it takes up slightly more than half the mattress. This mattress is made of good quality thick plastic/PVC that seems like it will be pretty durable. This kind of PVC material can get a little warm at night so I placed it under a good quality and fairly thick quilted mattress pad.On the initial set up it takes a while to inflate the mattress and after that it retains the air so it is ready to use anytime you want to turn it on. There is a rotary knob to set the pressure on the machine from minimum to maximum pressure. I feel it is still pretty firm even on the minimum setting, but perhaps that is a necessity in order to adequately relieve the pressure on alternating areas of the body.The mattress works by inflating and deflating adjacent cells to relieve pressure points. It continuously cycles as long as you have it turned on. There is a hum while it is running and a hissing sound when it is letting air out during the cycle. I am able to sleep through it but it might be a problem for a light sleeper.I am giving this mattress 5 stars because it is a quality made product that works reliably and it is a great value at this price point. I don't think this mattress is any more comfortable than a good camping air mattress or memory foam mattress. It is just a little firm for my taste, but I think it will do the job of relieving pressure points as it is marketed to do.

This was not hard to hook up, but it is a bit uncomfortable to use. Though this is not a silent pad, the slight noise is easily ignored after a few nights. However, we can't say it helped or not because after a month of trying, our older family member didn't want to use it anymore because of comfort issues. Overall, this is well constructed and is a good idea but didn't fit our needs.
