Magnetic induction fields
To play with and as a science project these is what got me my start in my knowledge of working with electricity. I went from an obsession of connecting these to 9 volt batteries to a hobby then to getting a career taking electronic college courses and classes

DANGEROUSLY OVERHEATING! DO NOT BUY! (Bad brushes)
I bought one of these less than a year ago as a replacement for a Maxx Air fan in an RV. It worked OK, but started to fail due to uneven wear on the commutator and carbon build-up. You can only take it apart and clean it so many times before it makes sense to just buy a new one. Especially for the price. So I bought a new one.Five minutes after installing and running it, I noticed a bad smell. I started to disassemble the fan to try to see why, and THE MOTOR WAS SO HOT I BURNED MY FINGERS! It was 190° F! I'm only running it on 12v, and it was only consuming 5.7 A. Perfectly normal. I returned it and bought a new one.The new one had the exact same issue, so I disassembled the motor itself to see if I could find an obvious problem, and boy was it obvious! The manufacturer installed BEVELED BRUSHES! The brushes are held perpendicular to the commutator, so it needs to have normal, square brushes, but for some reason they used beveled brushes. Beveled brushes are meant to be held at an angle to the commutator, but that's not how this motor is designed. The result is only a tiny fraction of the surface area of the brushes makes contact with the commutator. All of the current has to squeeze through that tiny area causing a ton of heat. The entire motor housing had reached 190°. I'm sure the windings and armature were even hotter. And thus was while it was being cooled by the fan it was running. Even with no load the motor was hitting 90°.This motor is unusable and should be pulled from Amazon until the company stops putting in beveled brushes. This company should never be trusted again.
