Caesar's heart of darkness
Latest film in the new Planet of the Apes series. Billed as being the end of the trilogy. Having seen the first two - 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - is essential, as there's nothing much in the way of exposition to help if you haven't.A while after the end of the second film, and Caesar and his apes are getting along fine. Till war comes their way in the shape of soldiers. Led by a ruthless colonel [Woody Harrelson]. Humanity isn't going down without a fight. But after Caesar suffers as a result, then if the Colonel wants a fight, he's going to get one.Caesar just has to be careful not to go too far in the process..Very much the end of a trilogy, as the story of Caesar has been the focal point of this series. And this brings that story to an end. Although it still would leave room for more films to follow. You can't fault this in so many respects. Superbly filmed. Eye catching visuals. Very solid acting from those playing humans. Once again amazing acting from the actors doing the motion capture for the apes. Strong script providing powerful emotional drama. There are obvious metaphors. Which are well played. As before, the apes who don't speak communicate in sign language. With subtitles you can't turn off.But all in all, those expecting an epic war movie aren't going to get that from this. It's focus is small and firmly on Caesar all the time. As powerful an emotional journey as the character goes through, an ape of few words and lots of expression isn't going to engage as much as a human character might. So you get emotional drama with occasional action moments. And as an emotional drama, it's fine. But it just didn't blow me away.Occasional light relief comes from the new character Bad Ape. Who is well played and written. And the ending will stay with you for a while.A perfectly decent film and a good end to the trilogy. But four stars from me rather than five. Still worth a watch though. The dvd begins with an anti piracy ad, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote. It has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, Castilian Spanish, Italian.Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian. Swedish. The box just says English for all of the above, but I have checked the menu and it is as above on there.Extras:Concept art gallery. Three different sections of various production designs. An audio commentary from the director. All about Caesar. A twelve minute long feature about the character and Andy Serkis's performance as him. An excellent and very involving watch,

Great end to a trilogy
The new film franchise of Planet of The Apes is nothing less than magnificent. The effects and perfomances are wonderful. If you liked the original series of movies, with Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall, you will love this fresh new take on it, where you get the entire story from the beginning of it all, and in this final movie, War For The Planet Of The Apes, what could be the end of it all...Great watch, over and over

High quality film, high quality release
The Blu-ray picture and sound quality are to a very high standard. The film itself is very impressive, although perhaps badly named. It isn't exactly a war film, more of a slow-burn escape film with lots of character drama. In fact all the rebooted Apes films could be more accurately re-titled. For example, "Dawn" should come before "Rise".The effects have reached an unprecedented level of realism; for the most part the apes look absolutely convincing. It doesn't feel like an empty technical demonstration; the effects serve the story and the characters. Performances are strong across the board, whether live action or performance capture.Decent special features documenting the making of the film.If I have one minuscule complaint that really doesn't matter: the Blu-ray case is the slim variety, so the width of the spine doesn't quite match the previous two films when displayed on the shelf. Talk about nit-picking! Otherwise, no complaints at all.A very good Blu-ray.As a side note: the enclosed Digital redemption code did not work. I was told it had already been redeemed on a date before I had even received and opened the Blu-ray. Did they send me a used code? Did somebody secretly open the Blu-ray, redeem the code, then wrap it up again? It took a lot of emailing back and forth between me, Fox and iTunes before they finally conceded and issued me with a new code. All's well that ends well.

Fantastic movie - Digital version redemption as convoluted as ever
The movie is great, but the digital version redemption system gets more bizarre with every release:When digital versions first appeared a few years ago, I simply redeemed them on the iTunes store and installed them on my ipad. Then, ipad versions stopped being available - I had to create an account with the studio (Fox and Sony) AND an account with Ultraviolet, AND an account with Flixster to watch the movie (download an app on my ipad). Including my iTunes account, that's FIVE accounts to watch movies.Over time, I got used to the Flixster app, installed it on my PC. Now most of my digital movies are on Ultraviolet/Flixster, and some are on iTunes. With this release of the latest POTA movie, the digital version now includes an iTunes version again, but the Ultraviolet version seems to want me to create a sixth account with Talk Talk to redeem it. The studios obviously don't want anyone to watch these digital versions of their movies, but still want to be seen to be offering this 'extra', so they make the process of redemption as difficult and convoluted as possible.
