Amtech P4010 300mm (12") Combination Square and Protractor

This is just as others have said, if absolute precision is essential then this will not do the job but where small tollerances are acceptable this is a great bit of value and surisingly good performance bit of hardware and although its not super precise it's only very slightly out, well within the tollerence levels for general joinery, building and perhaps even metal work.The average to good diy'er won't need anything better than this unless they require something that will last a long long time. Look after this and it will last a long time I suspect but throw it in the bottom of the toolbox and "neglect" it and it won't stand up to that I'm sure.Great item, this is what low cost good value item's should be, sadly these finds are rare but here we have one.

A little crudely made, a lot of sharp edges.Doesn't tighten up very well, but just about well enough.Suppose it's not bad for the price, and if I expected to use it more often I'd wish I'd paid more and bought better.But as it is, it's ok and it'll do for me.

I suppose i should have known better, you usually get what you pay for and this item is no exception. The main problem is that the locking pins which are supposed to engage with the groove in the rule are far too thin and fail to lock the square or protractor. Had it not been for the hassle involved I would have returned this item as the "Quality" is apalling. I have utilized part of the square by fastening it with a nut and bolt, the remainder has gone into the bin. Don't waste your money on one of these they are cheap and nasty.

I was in need to set my saw and required something to set it with so went for this item.Rule - the best part of the set, straight and made well enough, starts clean straight and nice 0mm.Set Square - 3 degrees out on right angle and 1 degree out on 45 degreeCentre finder - this part is with very rough and uneven surface way out of straightness, quite massive chunk of material not removed during manufacturing process, all approx 5 degrees out of right angleProtractor - when setting 0 degrees on one side it should measure 180 degrees on the other side, this one was showing 177degrees mainly due to scale being a sticker attached without any careIf you have time, 45/90 dregrees reference angles and fine grinding stone then set square and centre finder can be reworked into a usable state - I did this (approx 1 hour work).I may be tempted to replace protractor scale sticker but it looks flimsy so not sure how it will go.As said, if you are desperate or you're fine with a set that it out of angles by 2-5 degrees or you are willing to rework it then go for it, otherwise look elsewhere...One more thing - all these Amtech, Faithfull, Silverline, Rolson... they come from same supplier so expect same quality. On ebay there is a very nice set from Axminster Tools for 20 pounds, I've already ordered mine to be as primary square set.
