Interesting retrospective into one of the greatest doom/sludge metal acts ever.
This release by Danzig is pretty important, I feel like. It is a complete retrospective, in the way that it contains a handful of songs recorded in all 8 album cycles, all songs of which were unreleased up until the point of this, released in 2007.Whenever a band releases any kind of album with special packaging, as is the case with this release, I tend to study the ins-and-outs of the packaging a bit more, because they took the time and effort to create something unconventional. The disc trays are not in regular digipack form, rather, they are stacked like if one were to lay 2 normal digipacks flat on a surface, then put one on top of the other, so to speak. I really like the way this compilation was presented. The booklet, glued to the gatefold's left inner side, contains track names and a little explanation of each track in each of it's pages. I'm glad he put those in there, but I must say, it would have been nice to have the lyrics printed in the booklet. This package is the kind that you'd hang on your wall, really, it looks that good, to me at least. It /is/ a collector's piece, I would say, seeing as it is a "limited edition."The music itself is prime Danzig. The production is what you would expect from a Danzig record. Fuzzy and distorted. What he's come to be known for. These songs were not put on their respective session's records due to them not fitting the records theme that he was going for, (or the producer not liking it for whatever reason) and I've gotta say, it shows. So, the pacing of the album may seem jumbled, not to mention all over the place with the theme, but that's to be expected when one is working with a whole back-catalogue of unused tracks, written throughout 20 years. It was said in the notes "Each track is in chronological order from the time period of the first Danzig up until the latest." The latest here, in this context, being "Circle of Snakes." He has released 3 more albums since he released this compilation, "Deth Red Sabaoth", "Skeletons", and "Black Laden Crown." These 26 tracks are well worth the price, for what you get. It's 2 hours worth of music. And the artwork and/or pictures in the booklet are entertaining, to say the least. Also, if only to mention, the pages are nice and thick, very impressive quality paper. Favourites include both versions of "When Death Had No Name", "Angel Of The Seventh Dawn", "I Know Your Lie", "Satan's Crucifiction", "Warlock", "Crawl Accross Your Killing Floor", "Who Claims The Soulless", and "Dying Saraph". The lyrics are all pretty passionate. It's all quite "Danzig." Very much worth it for any lover of the darker, sludgier side of metal.
