Forget Flan - this is the best Creme Caramel I've found outside of Europe.
I discovered Creme Caramel during my travels in Europe and the Middle East during the '70s. Couldn't find it back home in the USA. Recently, Flan has become more available at Latin American Restaurants in the US. There is a difference between Flan and Creme Caramel. Creme Caramel is lighter and softer than Flan. Dr Oetker's is much closer to European Creme Caramel than Flan. This is my favorite by far.

When One Disappears, This Fills in Nicely
This is a great substitute for Jello Americana Custard. It has a smooth consistency and a gentle taste. Maybe not quite as flavorful as the discontinued Americana Custard but when needs must....

Stuff is lousy
This is certainly not flan, more like vanilla pudding. Had previously bought Goya flan mix which is excellent.

(3) Minor Additions Greatly Adds To The Presentation & Flavor
I've been making Creme Caramel, from scratch, for many years. I was anxious to try Dr Oetker brand, which would save me 1+ hours in preparation time. Over the years, I have added a couple ingredients to my scratch recipe that greatly improved the presentation & flavor. Mix all ingredients in the pot before turning up the heat. That's when I also add 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract & 1 level teaspoon of corn starch. (I will occasionally add the optional milk product below if I have it available) I continually whisk the mixture as it SLOWLY comes up to boiling temp. It's key to constantly whisk to prevent any sticking or lumps from forming. Lumps are caused by heat setting AND not whisking it thoroughly. Using those 3 simple ingredients makes the Dr Oetker Flan Creme Caramel taste just as good as the recipe I make from scratch. And if you really want to impress your dinner guest(s), try substituting 1 cup of heavy whipping creme for 1 cup of the milk and add the (3) ingredients I mentioned above. This will quickly become one of your favorites and very easy & quick to make. It's much easier to remove the dessert from your ramakin.

Not so good.
This mixes differenly from other brands and it tastes more like pudding instead of flan. It also makes half the amount of other brands. I won't but this again.
