Easy to Use and Results are Delicious!
The media could not be loaded. After having fabulous shaved ice on our trip to Japan, we wanted to recreate the treats we enjoyed there at home. We looked at every shaved-ice machine Amazon sells and finally settled on this attachment for our KitchenAid blender. It was a little more expensive than some of the standalone machines, but it’s a name we trust. It arrived very well packed in a box we can store the attachment and its parts in. The instructions were easy to follow and the parts were marked for easy assembly. It is somewhat loud, but it’s shaving ice, so that’s to be expected. We’ve only used the fine blade so far and the results were awesome: the same light, fluffy shaved ice we enjoyed on our trip. We even made our own matcha syrup, although American condensed milk doesn’t have the same consistency as the Japanese kind. Oh well! We will be buying more syrups at our kids’ request because we will definitely be using this regularly. One important note: it comes with four plastic, lidded molds in which to freeze water or whatever you want to turn into shaved ice. These take 12 to 24 hours to completely freeze into the “pucks” to use with the attachment. Once out of the freezer, you are supposed to leave it out at room temperature to “temper” it prior to shaving. Well, we haven’t tried this yet. We used regular ice cubes from our freezer that we placed in two layers inside the attachment’s cup… and it worked PERFECTLY. Possibly better, because we were able to refill it quickly three additional times to get the volume we wanted for one serving, then repeat for a second serving for my son. That would’ve been 8 molded ice pucks. I suppose you can buy more molds, but I definitely don’t have room in my freezer for more molds. I had to clear out a flat space for the four molds that came with this. Ice cubes work fine… don’t let the answers to asked questions on the sales page throw you. And if you have a KitchenAid mixer, this is the only shaved-ice machine you’ll ever need.

Well-designed, easy to use
My initial reaction was that KitchenAid put a lot of thought into this ice shaver- it was easy to assemble and it works well. The parts can only be put together one way and there's a nice click sound when they're properly seated. It slides onto the mixer easily and feels very secure. In reading the description I thought the frozen pucks wouldn't make much shave ice, but they do. Plain water resulted in a heaping mound in a cereal/soup bowl. Anything flavored or more dense (mashed fruit) has significantly less loft but it's still a good-sized portion for an adult.I mashed up an 8 oz container of raspberries. One freezing cup held 85-90% of the mash. It frozen well and shaved easily. It might be better to add a bit of liquid but I wanted to see if the blades could handle it. Then I added a little raspberry liqueur to the next batch and that was delightful. More than likely, one of my main uses will be to freeze teas pucks and use them instead of ice cubes to prevent diluting iced tea. Made some herbal peach tea today and the intensity didn't fade over time with the flavored shave ice. The possibilities are endless. It's so much better and healthier than colored sugar water in the typical snow come. If you don't feel creative the manual has a few recipes to get you started. Of course you can simply shave the ice and pour flavorings over it.A couple tips- Don't put fingers into the ice cup! Handling the blade disks alone was safe and easy. But once attached to the ice cup there's just a razor blade sticking out of the bottom. I tried to check for remaining ice and nicked a finger. Lesson learned.- Be sure to attach the main body to the mixer first, then add the ice cup to it. Align the tabs, it's really easy (watch the video on Amazon). I just read the quick guide initially and it takes dexterity, strength, and a few curse words to finagle it off the mixer.- Plan ahead. It takes time to freeze the pucks and plain water pucks need to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before shaving. Only 4 cups are included so if you have a big family or guests you'll want to have some pucks stashed in the freezer. The lingering question is longevity. Time will tell if it holds up. But it's well-made so I'm not concerned about that. It will get a lot of use this summer.
