Lord Foul's Bane

Notice the "U" shaped curve on the ratings profile. This is a fantasy epic that certainly divides opinion! The main two reasons for the haters are the unconventional protagonist and the ambitious prose style. It is true that while attempting to reach Dickensian heights of imagination in simile and metaphor Donaldson often stumbles, however, I admire his ambition and when it works it's beautiful. Give me stumbling ambition over trotting easy-reading any day. Recommended.

Slow start but soon gains momentum, excellent read. First book of first trilogy.
