English Grammar for Students of Japanese: The Study Guide for Those Learning Japanese (English Grammar Series)

Great and concise, but only Romaji
This book (and others in the series) are great, as they're succinct and concise. I only wish that the examples weren't only in Romaji, but also in kanji and kana. A huge part of Japanese is the script and identifying the particles, and it's a pretty glaring omission from a grammar text. Other than that, I'd definitely recommend this book (especially in tandem with another more robust source like Genki or something).

Very helpful, as I had forgotten even basic grammatical terms, and was wondering about what is shared or not between English and Japanese grammar. It’s not very extensive on the Japanese grammar part, but that’s not really what I wanted anyway.

Great for students
This is a great book for anyone who wants to improve their Japanese grammar. I own this in the Japanese and French edition. I love it, it's a quick and easy way to review or learn new grammar points and the explanations are easy to understand.

Easy and to the point
Easy and to the point. Not like one of those English grammar books from high school that spent one hundred pages teaching grammar and another hundred pages of the author explaining why he just wasted a hundred pages of your life on something that could have been summed up in half the time.

To all English learners of Japanese
This book clarifies many things for the learner of Japanese. By looking at grammar from both sides, the author makes connections that can make a huge difference in your language learning. I highly recommend this as a reference book.

An excellent resource
Though I began studying Japanese over ten years ago, I have just acquired this book and found it excellent. It is geared towards the beginning language student with no prior study of language, linguistics or grammar, therefore it doesn't even assume you can read Japanese text (all Japanese in the book is romanised). The author leads the reader through a simple crash course of English grammar, comparing and distinguishing with Japanese grammar along the way. To start off with we learn what simple things like nouns, verbs, and adjectives are in English, and then what they are in Japanese. We learn how to find them in a sentence, how to use them, and how they interact with one another. This builds up to more complex concepts without overwhelming the reader, such that by the end of the book the reader should be competent in the fundamentals of both English and Japanese grammatical terms. Each chapter focusses on a single concept, with numerous, easily understood illustrative examples and review exercises at the end (with answers in the appendix). At this price, it's definitely a worthwhile companion text to your formal textbook, or for intermediate and advanced students an excellent stand-alone work.
