An excellent resource for long term thinking in the sport
If you want to make triathlons a lifestyle choice; past your first attempts; then this book really helps visualize a whole year or season and think about how to structure your life around the demands of the sport and life.I’m fairly new, with only a year in and still just aiming to finish a race, rather to excel at it and still I found a lot of be learnt here. The whole long goal perspective and layering of improvements over years and the respect given to downtime and recovery, really appealed to me.This is definitely a book that you’ll want to reread annually as you plan your new season. At time I wished I read this book last year, but I think without the experience of the past year it’s hard to fully grasp a lot of what is being said.

Amazing source of knowledge.
I'm half way of the reading and I love it. However it's NOT a beginner book. I been told 100s of times about this book but I wasn't ready to read it. Now Im because been doing triathlons for 3 years. Im exactly where the author recomend to read his book. I don't need tips how to swim better. I need knowledge and experience how to swimm faster. I don't need tips how to get prepared for my first triathlonI. I need the expertise of a coach how can I run faster and recovery pronto. finally, I don't need tips how to rest before my big day. What I need is the mental preparation and strongest set on mind how to perform to my heights level. That is what this book has 30 years of experience in triathlons.I already see results and improvements in my training. I don't regret not read it before because I wasn't ready. if you are tired of mediocre finish in races like I was. If you are not reaching your full potential and don't want to pay for a couch this is the book you need in you book shell.

Tri Bible Indeed
This was an excellent purchase for a data driven athlete. This is definitely not for a first time athlete but if you are, I recommend reading Friel's beginner book first then popping back to this book when you are ready. If you are reading this, just buy it already. One tip is instead of a paper notebook I have poured everything into OneNote for an optimal notebook workout log, all the way from an annual gameplan to a daily breakdown. Its nice to have everything on my phone ready to go in case I want more info on what I scheduled.

It's all good quality reading and writing and thus may not matter ...
I made the mistake of thinking that the new version would contain extra pages. But in reality it is some 50 pages shorter than my old copy of the third addition. It's all good quality reading and writing and thus may not matter to most.Though I do not dislike the newly edited version, I think some of the changes seem a little cosmetic. The diagrams were easier to understand in the third addition and I wish they had stuck with them.I don't think many of the updates will make a huge difference for many of us back of the pack individuals though. It is Still a master piece and must read.

A complete understanding, not a plan.
If you’re looking for an easy to follow triathlon training plan, this is not it.If you want to understand the reasons behind building a plan, and understand how much work actually goes into being a coach, than this book is for you. It’s a lot of information, but if read actively with an effort placed towards understanding and retaining what you have read, you’ll learn how to develop an effective training plan for yourself and maybe even others. Most importantly, you’ll understand WHY you’re doing something vs something else, which in my opinion is far more important for the serious athlete.Highly recommend.

Love it
As an elite amateur triathlete looking at building up a coaching business, this is a must read. I'm only 25% finished and I've already learned so much.

Outstanding Tri Training Resource
I’ve been running for many years, but in my late 50s decided to try triathlon. After my first sprint triathlon, which I completed with some inspiration from Friel’s “Fast After 50,” I was hooked. But I realized that training was more complex than just running, and that sports science has really advanced in the past 25 years. Wanting to improve for next year, I bought this book. Some of the material required a couple readings as it gets a bit technical, but the heart of the book for me was walking through building an annual training plan, something I’d never done before. The chapters on setting training heart rate zones and speed skills were also excellent. Short of hiring a coach, this is a great resource for triathlon training.
