Q: This grill looks like painted metal. Is this safe to grill on?

Yes it's powder coated to the best of my mind. That's where they baked that on there. It's more than just spray paint.

Q: will this hold a 6 qt dutch oven?

you have to remember that 6 QT doesn't include the contents...or the weight of the dutch oven, but this rig should hold anything you throw at it, just make sure to secure it deeper for a heavy load, so the answer is yes

Q: Can you use a mallet or sledge/block to drive the support pole into the ground or is that cap on the top only decorative?

I would not use a sledge, the bottom is pointed so it goes in the ground easily. The cap is thicker than 1/8 inch, about 2" in diameter. mine is welded to the stake in three spots but not large welds. If you hit it square with a light (12 oz to 2 lb) hammer it should be fine. The stake is too small to support a lot of weight in soft dirt or sand. I put a sleeve in concrete in my yard. Another option is to use 2 guy ropes opposite the fire pit. Good luck, hope this helps

No, screw keeps it where you want it to be. Easy to adjust mid Cook.
