Validation and explanation for why you've always hated your performance management program!
For anyone who has recognized the challenges of existing performance management programs, this book is for you! Chandler clearly outlines all the reasons that traditional performance management practices actually do the opposite of what they set out to do - increase performance. Then she lays out a detailed plan of how to create a system that works for your unique organization. The key of this plan? Involve the people - not just the HR team, not just the Executives, but a cross-section of teams and departments who will represent the entire organization and bring a variety of perspectives to a creative solution that will get the outcomes you desire.Throughout the chapters, Chandler shares her years of experience which led her this recognition of the need to drastically change how organizations approach performance management. She backs up her experience with extensive research on change, human behavior and organizational development. She's also incredibly honest -- this work is hard, you are dealing with people and massive change -- however she provides insights, a toolbox, and even an online community to learn and find support from others working on this change!

Initial portions of book describing issues with performance mamagement are great. Prescriptions and suggestions for solving the problems are less so. Still worthwhile but you may want to skim the later parts.

Let the Revolution Begin!
I have been in HR & Operations for over 25 years, on 3 continents and 5 different countries, and I can tell you I found myself nodding my head in agreement so many times while reading this book, that I started to feel like a bobble-head. Ms. Chandler has written a book that not only will resonate with HR professionals, but anyone who has ever received, written/delivered and/or tracked the dreaded annual performance review throughout their career. She clearly identifies the issues and challenges, and, what is more important, provides a clear road map to a better place. As a bonus, this book is well researched, written in clear practical style, and delivers more than a few chuckles. What more can I say, except read this book and . . "Let the revolution begin!"

Practical and Fun Read for Real Results
This book is easy to read while being practical with tools and steps to act on the ideas you will find yourself quickly wanting to try. I've been asked by almost every organization I've every worked in as an HR professional to tweak, redesign, streamline or simplify performance management. It usually led to better compliance and in some cases better quality of use by managers, but rarely can I say it resulted in a better experience for employees, managers, or the organization. This is the first approach I know of that gets at the root cause of why that is, and how to get better results. Once you start reading, you'll want to get started!

terrific read!
This is a great book for anyone in any organization to more clearly understand how to drive performance in your organization. What is truly cool and unlike so many cookie cutter business books on the market that have all the answers in 8 easy steps, is that this book gives you the tools to create your own solutions that work for your organization. Happy reading!

In defense of performance management - but ditch the annual review
This is not a textbook, but it is packed with so much knowledge and so many experiences pulled from real life organizations, you will learn as much about performance management as if you had attended class. Part way into the book, there was a short paragraph captioned New Thought, Thoughtfully Applied. That’s what attracted me to this book. I am a strong advocate for performance management and think inspired performance is the result of coaching, assessment, feedback, and encouragement delivered in methods unrelated to the annual performance review. The book is thoughtfully constructed in practical pieces, to give readers a chance to wrap their minds around the concepts. First, rethink what you believe; next, redesign what you do; and finally, reboot to start something more effective. This book is packed with things you can do to transform performance management so it becomes a benefit to motivation, not a detriment to morale.Don’t be at first a naysayer or at last a dinosaur that doesn’t see the possibilities for a new way of really improving performance of individuals which will be reflected in improved organizational performance.“Whatever you do, trust yourself, trust your people, and trust the process. Above all, keep moving forward, and never, ever look back.” – M. Tamra Chandler
