The fruit is dried in order to preserve it. The fresh amla fruit is quite tart and sometimes bitter. To prolong its shelf life, the fruit is dried and salted to give it a nicer flavor. Most Indians use the dried amla as a mouth freshner (eat it as salted candy).

The dried gooseberrys were not at all good quality. They are soggy and have sand all through . Bad quality product and costly too. Pls do not buy
