I have read at least three translations of the Quran, not knowing Arabic. The last one was a rather florid version by an English don at Oxford or Cambridge. This one is far more accessible. A very quick read. I give it four stars only because it was clear to me in reading it that the anonymous translator assured that sometimes difficult and controversial passages received the kindest, most Islam-supportive interpretations. That is the risk you run reading any translation, but especially those of seminal religious works like the Quran, the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, the Bhaghavad Gita, and others of similar importance to their adherents. But knowing that also helps one read this version with a solid critical eye, which is why I recommend it. You will get a very good feel for the recurrent themes, rhythms, sources and limitations of this incredibly influential book. It deserves far more Western readers for those reasons alone, and this is easily the most digestible version of it.
