The Jungle Book - an exotic tale of adventure!
My seven-year-old daughter loves to read and I was eager to introduce her to the classics in English literature. I knew the original might be too daunting for her due to the high level vocabulary and have been looking around for a well-written adaptation that retains the essence of the original. The Stepping Stones Classic series of books for independent young readers fit the bill perfectly. These are abridged versions of the classics and are engaging without being too daunting for young readers who might otherwise be put off in attempting to tackle the original versions.I make it a point to read these books before passing them on to my daughter to ensure she will be able to handle the language on her own and also to check the content. Diane Wright Landolf has done a commendable job on this adaptation. The language is neither too simple nor too advanced for an independent young reader. There are black and white illustrations that engaged my daughter (a visual learner) and kept her attention throughout the two hours (collectively) or so she spent reading this book. The chapters are short and the plot keeps moving along, keeping the reader engaged. Highly recommended for independent young readers ages 6-9.

Great for an 8 year old
My husband has been reading this book out loud to my son at night. Although most of the words are just as simple as most of the other stepping stone books, it could be a bit more difficult than the others for an eight year old to read to himself. The number of characters to track and the difficulty of their names might be a challenge.Having it read out loud was really great though. The story was engaging and thought-provoking.

Just what I needed for summer camp reading to campers ...
Just what I needed for summer camp reading to campers. We are working on one book a week in short segments and I wanted classics. This fit the bill perfectly!

Color Cover is deceiving.
Very disappointed in the poorly printed black and white pictures inside the book. The cover in color is deceiving. My daughter was so excited to see the cover of the book. We opened the book and all the pictures are so dark and poorly printed. She walked away at the second page! B&W is not the problem. But the quality of the pictures is so bad. It looked like a mountain and a rock to her in the above picture.
