I don't think so I think it charges the leisure battery from the starter battery not the other way

Yes and Yes. If you have a smart alternator or any alternator for that matter, you don't need any connection to the ignition. The software takes care of the charging. Fuse or circuit breaker inline with the supply from the starter battery. Cable sizes are important.

I would assume yes if it’s still connected to the leisure battery

Yes but you should never let battery fully discharge as it damages the cells
