Q: Is the waterproof cover removable?

It isn't a waterproof cover. The material the mattress is enclosed in is waterproof and does not come off. It is a part of the matttess and cleans as easy as wiping witha wet cloth. My kid had a poop party in her crib and there was feces everywhere. The mattress was much easier to clean than the kid, crib, wall, carpet, and hair. I just took some lysol wipes and wiped it down and that was done.

I'm not sure what you are asking for, but the mattress stays cool and my granddaughter sleeps very well on it.

I wouldn't say chemical, it smells kind of like new industrial plastic which is basically what the mattress is wrapped in.

This mattress does NOT have dual firmness. Both sides are the same firmness. However, their other mattress, the Perfect Start *Deluxe* is dual-firmness, meaning there is one side for infants (firm) and one for toddlers (softer).
